An Ordinance establishing regulations for the prevention of fires, con-
ferring certain powers upon the Chief of the Wire Department and
providing a penalty for the violation of said ordinance.
BE IT OHDP.INED by the Hoard of Commissioners of the City of Salina,
Kansas:
Section 1. If any chirrnev, flue or fireplace in any public or pri-
vate building in the City of Selina, Kansas is or shall be of such con-
struction, or if the same shall hereafter be in.such condition as to be
liableto cause a fire is such building, the use of su.ch chimney, flue
or fireplace for firing purposes shall be prohibited..
Section 2.The Chief of the Fire Department or.his.duly authorized
assistants shall have authority to inspect all chimneys; flues or fire-
places in the City of Salina, and for that purpose shall have the right
to enter any building during reasonable hours. He shall have the power
and authority to condemn any and all chimneys which, in his opinion, are
in an unsafe or dangerous condition or the construction of which does
not comply with the requirements and provisions of any ordinance of the
City of Salina then in force, respecting the construction of chimneys,
flues and fireplaces and he shall order such chimney, flue or fireplace
as he may condemn to be repaired, rebuilt or town down, and such order
shall be complied with within ten days and,the use of same shall immed-
iately upon giving of such order, be discontinued.
Section 3. No person shall deposit or stack any hay or straw with-
in ,500 feet of any building located within the fire limits. Packing
material shall be kept in metal or wood, metal lined, bins, having self
closing or automatic covers. Refuse from rooms where packing or un-
packing is done shall be removed daily.
Sect -'on 4. It shall be unlawful to store ashes inside of any non -
fireproof building unless they be stored. in an incombustible container or I
receptacle and a clearance of at least 5 feet shall be maintained between
such containers or receptacles and any combustible material. Ashes shall
not be stored outside of any building in wooden receptacles or dumped
contact with or in close proximity to any combustible material.
Section 5. It shs.11 be unlawful to store or keep any explosive in
excess of one pound of gunpowder in any storeroom, wareroom, building or
on any premises within the City, providing that not more than five pounds
of gunpowder may be kept in closed metal canisters in a store or wareroomI
away from artificial heat or light, and provided further that not more
than 50 pounds of gunpowder may be kept if in a magazine made of fire-
proof material or of •wood covered with sheet iron and mounted on wheels
and kept securely locked except when necessarily opened -for -use by autho-I
rized persons, and not more than 1000 blasting caps in a similar, but sep-
arate magazine. Said magazine shall be conspicuously placarded in red let-
ters at least. 4 inches high "EXPLOSIVFS" which placard shall be located
within the building, on the floor nearest the street level and within 10
feet of the street entrance.
Section 6. Any person, firm or corporation who shall keep or store
gunpowder shall obte,in a permit from the Chief of the Fire Department, who
shall inspect the place where same is kept and the dealer shall fully dis-
close to said Chief where same is kept both in the day and night time.
Section 7, Any person, firm or corporation violating any of the pro-
visions of this ordinance stall be fined not less than 05.00 nor more than
$25.00 for each offense and every day that any of the terms, conditions or
provisions of this ordinance are not complied with shall be considered a
separate offense.
Section 8. This ordinance shall take effect and be in force from
and after its publication in the Book of Revised Ordinances of the City
of Salina.

ORDINANCE 140. 4301
An Ordinance establishing regulations for the prevention of fires,
conferring certain powers upon the Chief of the bemire Depart-
ment, and providing a penalty for the violation of said
ordinance.
BE IT ORDAINED by the Board of Commissioners of the City of
Salina, Kansas.
Section 1. If any chimney, flue or fireplace in any public
or private building in the City of Salina, Kansas is or shall be of
such construction, or if the same shall hereafter be. in such con-
dition as to be liable to cause a fire in such building, the use
of such chimney, flue or fireplace for firing purposes shall be
prohibited.
Section 2. The Chief of the r'ire Department or his duly

Section 6. Any person, firm or corporation who shall or store gun-
powder shall obtain a permit from the Chief of the "'ire Department, who
shall inspect the place where same is kept, and the dealer shall fully
disclose to said Chief where same is kept both in the day and night time.
Section 7. Any person, firm or corporation violating any of the
provisions of this ordinance shall be fined not less than 05'.00 nor more
than 425.00 for each offense and every day that any of the terms, condi-
tions or provisions of this ordinance are not complied with shall be
considered a separate offense.
