AN OhDINkNCE amending Section 5-203 of Revised ordinances 1925 as
amended by Section 1 of ordinance No. 3643, relating to the
construction of buildings within the City of Salina, and re-
pealing said original sections.
BE IT onDA1NED by the Board of Commissioners of the City of Salina,
Kansas:
Section 1. That Section 5-203 of tree Revised Ordinances of 1925
as amended by Section 1 of Ordinance No. 3643, be and the same is here-
by amended to read as follows:
'Section 5-203. buildings within the fire Limits. Every building
hereafter erected, enlarged, rebuilt or reconstructed with in the fire
limits as now defined or as they may be hareafter defined by ordinance
shall have all exterior walls constructed only of brick, stone, concrete,
terra cotta or tile, and shall otherwise comply with the following require-
ments:
(a) Walls of One Story Buildings. In one story buildings, all walls
used as party or fire walls, and all walls located within three feet of
the lot line or of the alley line shall be constructed of brick and
cement mortar not less than thirteen inches in thickness or its fire
resistive equivalent in other non-combustible materials, and all party
or fire walls, and rear parapet walls where the rear wall is within ten
feet of the alley line, shall extend three feet above the point where
the roof of such building joins any such party or fire wall or rear wall,
and all such walls shall have footings at least two feet under ground.
(b) Openings in fire or party walls. No unprotected openings shall
be permitted in any party wall or fire wall when any other building shall
stand or shall be subsequently erected within twenty five feet of such
opening.
(c) Basements. In all bui dings having basements, either the frame
work over the heating plant and fuel room shall be of reinforced concrete,
monolithic or protected steel construction joined. to an eight inch concrete
brick and cement mortar, or wall, or its equivalent in fire resistance,
without openings into other buildings except the entrance door to such
room which shall be metal sheathed and automatically self-closing, or
the entire first floor shall be of reinforced concrete, monolithic or
protected steel construction. til inside stairways shall be constructed
of non-combustible materials and properly trapped, and all other inside
openings from the basement shall be properly protected.
(d) Sleeping rooms. Where any story of any such building above
the first floor is used or intended to be used for sleeping rooms, the
specifications above required for the first floor over the basement shall
apply to the frame work, stairways and openings of each such floor so used..
(e) Skylights and alley openings. All skylights, and all windows
opening toward the alley, shall be of metal and wire glass con-
struction and all doors and exposed woodwork on the alley side
shall be metal sheathed.
(f) hoofs. All roofs shall be covered with metal com-
position or tile roofing.
(g) Hotels and "partment Houses. The foregoing specifi-
cations for sleeping rooms within the fire limits shall apply to
all buildings three stories or more in height used or intended to
be used as hotels, rooming houses or apartment houses hereafter
erected, enlarged, rebuilt or reconstructed within the City of
Sa.ina.
(h) Structures Outside of Fire :Limits. Structures not ex-
ceeding one story in height, not used for permanent dwelling house
purposes and having a ground area of not to exceed 320 square feet
between walls lying outside of the fire limits, may be constructed
Of 5 inch hollow the or hollow concrete blocks, laid on edge with
cement mortar.
(i) Structures not Enclosed. Structures not enclosed on
more than three sides, to be used for automobile parking or storage,
may be constructed within or without the fire limits, of 5 inch
hollow tile or hollow concrete blocks laid on edge with cement mortar
and if' in the fire limits shall have a metal or composition roof.
Definitions. All terns used in this section shall be
defined in accordance with the usage of the Kansas Inspection
Bureau, Topeka, Kansas.
Section 2. That Section 1 of Ordinance No. 3643, amending
Section 3 of ordinance leo. 2993 (being Section 5-203 of Revised
Ordinances 1925) be and the same is hereby repealed and all other
ordinances or parts of ordinances, in so far as they specifically
conflict with the provisions of this ordinance be and they are here-
by repealed.
Section 3. This ordinance shall take effect and be in force
from and after its publication in the official city paper.

ORDINANCE NO. 3674
