Director's Report - October 2006
We had an interesting and interactive day on Monday, October 9 at our Annual
Staff In-Service Training (ASIST) Day. We close the library all day for this event.
We had 37 staff in attendance for a seminar on the 7 Habits of Highly Effective
People with Dr. Paul Hedlund, ofKWU. For some staff, it was not easy to sit all
day in the Prescott Room, but Paul had a lot of variety, made us think and talk and
the day went fast.
Planning: The committee will meet on October 24 at 7 PM to discuss the results of
the survey and to begin the final phase of our planning. The surveys are being
analyzed at this time and I will share what I know during our meeting. Nearly 300
were completed.
Projects: We have a number of small projects in various stages of development.
They include: redesign of the web page~ a new art exhibit by Barbara Solberg of
Lawrence~ a proposal for some landscape photos for the Tech Center~ a need for
some fabric art work to decorate and help with sound in the Tech Conference
Room~ the policy review~ new web cams in the Tech Center. We're still waiting on
word of the new High-DefVideo Conference Equipment from the State. We are a
few weeks away from work on the replacement roof.
CLASS has been busy. We are at mid-semester and while enrollment is good,
higher than in the past, we also have more cancellations, last minute registrations
and issues. We are trying to develop policy to review for the library policy manual.
Sandy hired a part time evening custodian last month and he is a big help in room
set up and tear down. With computer classes, children's programs and CLASS, it
has not been unusual for us to have 8-12 activities in a day.
I am trying to find time to do a statistical study comparing some of our numbers
with those from the Public Library Data Survey. It's not a priority, but is of
interest, and I will get to it. Also, a reminder that I will be gone from Oct. 27 -
Nov. 4 for the Mountain Plains Leadership Institute in New Mexico.
As always, if you have questions, suggestions or comments, be sure to let me
know. Thanks for your help.
