BOARD TRAINING Nontraditional items: Katie Pearson Head of Youth Services Katie spoke to the Board about our collection of things. Youth has a guitar, scan markers, planet projector, 3D pens, robot coding mouse, science kits and pindaloo. Adult Circulation has roku, hotspots, nintendo switch, DVD player, turntable, binoculars, telescope, light therapy lamp, digital microscope, hobby tool kit, household tool kit, gardening tools, indoor and outdoor games, yoga mats, cake pans, dog training puzzle and the seed library February thru June. Discussion/Action Discussion - Director Report ●Katie Zey has created a QR code for the Library to use for donations. ●We are going to participate in Match Madness again this year. ●In patron feedback, it was mentioned how Emilio helped a patron with Salina resources. As a Library we try to help patrons with Salina resources. ●We have started on our new strategic plan this year and have already completed some items. ○Amy Adams and Katie Zey have created an annual marketing plan. ●The Salina Reads event kicked off last Saturday along with the Friends book sale. The Mad Science programs for youth were successful and many positive comments were received. ●Staff training was held yesterday. Library services, security and upcoming work plans were discussed. Staff are provided access to Cy Wakeman’s virtual reality based training and homelessness/crisis training by Ryan Dowd. DVACK and the Emergency Food Bank also came and gave presentations to increase staff awareness of Salina resources. ●We are reviewing our automated communications. ●We will be painting in the Prescott Room & Processing backroom as well as finish up some small projects in those areas. ●Several projects are being considered: RFID door locks, the phone system and intercom system. The intercom system we have currently is very outdated and cannot be heard in several areas in the library. It has only 1 location where announcements can be made. Emilio is also getting quotes on repairing the loading dock door. ●We installed new holds shelves as well as new and popular book shelves. These shelves are lower in height and are mobile. ●We continue to fundraise for the Youth Services remodel. Amy is writing a matching grant. If we raise four million they will grant one million. ●Melanie offered suggestions to the Board on the ways they can engage. ●Melanie is working on the state library and CKLS reports. A new question on the state library report is asking how much we would like to receive in 2025. ●We are getting quotes for snow removal. ●One of our pumps is not working on our boiler. Pestinger is providing help with that. ●We had a 1st Amendment audit last week. Discussion - Other ●Donations - Melanie received estimates on the items we are going to donate and the board said to continue to move forward as voted upon last month. ●Review 2022 Budget & 2022 Statistics. We ended the year with transferring $200,000 to the Capital Improvement Fund. Melanie went over some explanations of the Revenue and Expenditure report. Our stats continue to increase. ●Review: Board Bylaws & Board Orientation ●Review: CKLS funds & Board Requirements - CKLS has a requirement for Board training. Melanie asked the Board if they had any specific areas for training that they were interested in. ●Saline County Workforce Update - Job listings continue to be around 2500. Unemployment is low. Melanie went over information provided by the Salina Chamber of Commerce on why it’s so hard to hire right now as well as all that the Library has done in the past year for hiring. Action Items ●Policy Manual Updates: Employee Policy Manual - benefits We want to clarify how benefits would be handled for reduced hours for employees. Discussion was held by the Board. Melanie will bring the policy back to the Board next month. ●Library Policy Manual - Library Hours Melanie spoke to the Board about our hours and usage. She has proposed changing some hours based upon usage of our community. ➔Motion Motion made by: Brendan Burke To approve the changes to the library hours as presented Monday - Thursday 9:00 A.M. - 8:00 P.M. Friday 10:00 A.M. - 6:00 P.M. Saturday 10:00 A.M. - 5:00 P.M. Sunday 12:00 P.M. - 6:00 P.M. Sunday 12:00 P.M. - 5:00 P.M. Second: Helen Gregg Motion passed unanimously. Executive Session None. Other Business & Board Comments ●Susan asked why Wowbrary seemed to be absent for a while. She also asked about salt being removed. ●Melanie asked the board about hiring 16 & 17 year olds. ●Mike Hoppock asked about the fundraising goal.
