Director ReportDirector Report
Speakers Consortium
https://libraryc.org/salinapubliclibrary/upcoming
The Consortium will create 2-3 online bestselling-author events per month which will be streamed to
patrons of every member library. These will be live events with interactive Q&A sessions where
participants can ask questions directly to the author. Books and authors selected will cover a wide
range of fiction and non-fiction genres including historical fiction, contemporary fiction, romance,
OwnVoices, poetry, business, personal growth, social justice, history, art, culture and more.
Author talks will be “white-labeled” on each library’s microsite so they will look like they are coming
directly from your library. This means your library will get the credit for offering these amazing talks
even though you don’t need to spend any staff time creating the content.
The first event is scheduled for July 7, followed by the second on July 14.
The Henna Artist: Author Talk with Alka Joshi
Alka Joshi - NYT Bestselling Author and Reese Witherspoon Book Club Pick

We will be working to host a couple of the author visits as live-streaming sessions in the library in the fall and
winter.

Summer Reading
Summer reading is amping up. We just finished our 3rd week on June 9th and have seen a large increase in
unique participants. We are currently at 2,743 items read overall with 2,355 of those being from our youth
participants. In comparison to the last two years, this year is gaining momentum and we are starting to see an
increase in numbers in all areas (youth, adult, and overall).

Smoky Hill River Festival
The library ran the poetry wall at the Smoky Hill River Festival on June 11 & 12. Staff helped festivalgoers
create magnetic poetry and handed out books to youth. Over the two days, staff interacted with about 275
festivalgoers.
Library Mobile App
SPL now has an app! ByWater, who manages our library system, worked with
Hanna Leiker, Tech Specialist to finalize our branded app. The app will be
available through Google Play and the Apple App Store. This app allows
patrons to search our catalog, place holds, and check their account status.
School Connections
USD 306 is having a Summer Jam summer school program from July 18-21.
They are utilizing our sphero robots for a great learning experience. USD 305
is using a 3D pen set from the Library during summer school. The Library
works to partner with schools to help in student learning in a variety of ways.
Health Screenings
In partnership with Salina Family Healthcare, patrons can have blood
pressure, pulse, oxygen saturation and blood sugar checks. Patrons receive
health education, talk with a nurse, receive assistance with discount program
applications and can schedule appointments.
