Annual Fair Housina Seminar
Every year in April the Community Relations Division (CRD) organizes and presents the
Fair Housing Seminar, which is an event to teach the public about rights and
responsibilities related to fair housing. Due to COVID-19 the event was canceled in
2020 and conducted over Zoom as a webinar in 2021. After taking proper COVID-19
precautions CRD was excited to host the 2022 Fair Housing Seminar in-person. The
event occurred from 8:30-3:30 at the Tony's Pizza Event Center with 51 participants
attending.
Various speakers covered a wide range of topics related to Fair Housing. The morning
kicked off with a panel (conducted by Michelle Martin of CRD, Nayenci Lamar of
Independent Connection, Debra Bengston of Accessible Home Health, and Trell Grinter
of OCCK) that discussed Tools to Help with Reasonable Accommodations. Dr. John
Fliter Jr of Kansas State University took the stage next and presented on The History
and Impact of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Michelle Ewert of Washburn University
School of Law presented on Fair Housing Implications of Domestic Violence, Sexual
Harassment, and Criminal Records Screening. Teresa Baker of Housing and Credit
Counseling spoke on Fair Housing: Rights and Responsibilities. The final speaker was
Michelle Martin (CRD), who served as replacement speaker for Claudette Humphrey
(Catholic Charities of Northern Kansas), on the topic of The Financial Trap of Predatory
Lending.
Salina Regional Health Center and Great Plains Association of Realtors participated as
corporate sponsors, while Salina Family Healthcare Center, Hutton, and Kansas
Housing Resources Corporation served as event sponsors. There were also seven
vendor booths at the event.
The event was approved for 5.25 credits for social work, 5 credits for real estate
professionals and 6 credits for attorneys.
