3.1 Proclamation Black HistoryPROCLAMATION OF THE CITY OF SALINA WHEREAS: Since 1976, Black History Month has been officially recognized and celebrated throughout the United States of America, focusing on the contributions that African Americans have made to American history in their struggles for freedom and equality, thus deepening our understanding of our Nation's history; and WHEREAS: Black History Month is an opportunity for all Americans, regardless of color, to honor the rich cultural heritage and legacy of people of African descent. This time allows us to celebrate the contributions across social, cultural, economic, artistic and political life in America made by African Americans; and WHEREAS: Our responsibility as citizens is to acknowledge and address the inequalities and injustices that still linger today. Let us reflect on the sacrifices and contributions made by generations of African Americans, and let us remember and honor those who fought against societal norms and unjust laws; WHEREAS: The citizens of Salina have been in the forefront of efforts to establish a compassionate society based on inherent dignity of all its members, by taking a leadership role in a proactive educational efforts, with the end goal of eliminating all forms of discrimination and disadvantage. We continue to work toward becoming an inclusive community in which all citizens - past, present, and future - are respected, recognized, and allowed to enjoy their full rights as a citizen of the United States of America; NOW THEREFORE, 1, Trent W. Davis, M.D., Mayor of the City of Salina, do hereby proclaim the month of February 2022, Black History Month and urge that every citizen of Salina join me in celebrating the diversity and individual character of each one of our neighbors, by recognizing that a fundamental strength of our community is based on the diversity among us.
