Mayor Mathews presiding, City Attorney G. ti. Spencer and the fol- lowing named councilmen answered to roll call; Underwood, Grimes, Smith, Spaeth, Reed, Richolson, Brown, Waite, Todd and Peters. Councilman Todd, of the 'Ways and Means Committee recommended that the City purchase the necessary coal for the use of the City Building, as soon as possible. Councilman Brown moved that the matter be referred to the ;Mays a. -Id Beans Committee with power to act. Councilman Todd of the :'lays and Means Committee moved that the Mayor appoint appraisers to condemn a site for the erection of a voting place in the south precinct of the Third "yard. Appraisers to bring in a report on the 21 foot strip adjacent to rutnam Avenue also a report on the south 40 feet of said strip. Councilman Brown moved that the report of the committee be adopted and that the City Attorney be instructed to prepare the necessary ordinance. A petition was received asking for permission to locate a pop corn wagon on the north side of Iron Avenue, west of Santa Fe Avenue, during the day time, offdring to pay the sum of 0100.00 for said permission, and on roll call permission was denied. U. '1'. anyder asked for the appointment of a special police without pay from the City, as watchman on the sewer job under the contract of M. R. Amerman. Councilman Brown moved that the request be granted, and that the City Clerk be authorized to swear in Nels Dose for said ap- pointment. Rev. Wilson appeared before the Council and asked for the extension of the sewer on Eighth Street north of Elm Street to accomodate the new colored M. E. Church constructed on said street. Councilman Brown moved that the matter be referred to the Sewer and Drainage Committee. Rev. Wilson also invited the idayor and Councilmen to attend the colored band concert at the Convention IIall, ',Wednesday evening, May 15th, 1918. On m otion, invitation was accepted. Councilman Todd introduced the following resolution: WHEREAS, at the Regular Meeting of the Council, June 25th, 1917, it was unanimously decided to submit, at the next Regular Election, the Pool Hall question to the qualified voters of the City of Salina for their decision, and, ZIEREASI at the Regular Election April 2nd, 1918, the voters by a substantial majority expressed themselves as being opposed to the granting of licenses to pool halls, Now, Thereofore, BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the duly elected Council of the City of Salina, put ourselves on record in accordance with the expressed will of the majority of the voters and refuse after June 30th, 1918, to grant licenses for conducting pool halls with- in the corporate limits of the City of Salina. Councilman Todd moved the adoption of the same and on roll call the following vote was had; Ayes: Smith, tFlaite, Todd and Peters. (4) Nays ; Underwood, Grimes, Spaeth, Reed, Richolson, and Brown. (6) The resolution was declared lost. Mayor Mathews submitted the name of Chas. E. Banker, as City Clerk for the ensuing year, and on motion of Councilman Smith the appointment was confirmed. Mayor Mathews submitted the name of G. A. "pencer as City Attorney for the ensuing year, and on motion of Councilman Brown the appointment was confirmed. Mayor Mathews submitted the name of Ellen Nyberg as City Stenographer for the ensuing year, and on motion of Councilman Todd the appointment was confirmed. Mayor 1°'athews submitted the name of Ed. Buchanan as Street Commissioner for the ensuing year, and on motion of Councilman Brown the appointment was confirmed. Mayor Mathews submitted the name of c'. G. Wakenhut as City Engineer for the ensuing year, and on motion of Councilman Reed the appointment was confirmed. Mayor Mathews submitted the name of L. B. Kemper as Park Commissioner for the ensuing year, and on motion of Councilman Reed the appointment was confirmed. Mayor Mathews submitted the name of Jerome 11anly as City Marshal for the ensuing year, and on motion of Councilman Waite the appointment was confirmed. Payor Mathews submitted the name of is. F. Gibson as Assis- tant City i'iarshal for the ensuing year, and on motion of Council- man Smith the appointment was confirmed. Mayor 1viathews submitted the name of 0. C. Henry as Special Officer for the ensuing year, and on motion of Councilman Smith the appointment was confirmed. Mayor iuiathews submitted the name of J. H. Riddle as Policeman for the ensuing year, and on motion of Councilman reters the ap- pointment was confirmed. Mayor Mathews submitted the name of J. ff. Lee as roliceman for the ensuing year, and on motion of Councilman Todd the appoint- ment was confirmed. Mayor I4iathews submitted the name of R. P. Wh.elchel as Special Police in Oakdale Park, and on motion of Councilman Reed the ap- pointment was confirmed. Mayor i'iathews submitted the name of J. V. Dickerson as IRotor Policeman for the ensuing year, and on motion of Councilman Smith thr appointment was confirmed. Mayor Mathews submitted the name of R. llontgomery as Traffic Officer for the ensuing year, and on motion of Councilman Todd the appointment was confirmed. Mayor Mathews submitted the name of Geo. Barneck as Assistant Fire Chief for the ensuing year, and on motion of Councilman Grimes the appointment was confirmed. Mayor "lathews submitted the name of Sam Webster as City Mall Custodian for the ensuing year, and on motion of Councilman Under- wood the appointment was confirmed. Mayor iuiathews submitted the names of the following; Special Police, (without pay from City) . A. L. Rinard, mecrchants' Police, Fred Schumaker, bFlatson-imrand-Kasper Grocery Company, Thos. Robb, Lee hardware Company, Patrich Ryan, Lee Hardware Company, Cevren Johnson, Lee ldiercantile Company, Delos Gibson, Lee j,'Iercantile Company, Dave Arnold, Lee Mercantile Company, J. e. Lamer, Lee iviercantile Company. On motion of Councilman Brown the appointments were confirmed by the Council. On motion of Councilman Underwood, Council adjourned. City Clerk.
