COUNCIL CHAMBER,
SALINA , KANSAS.
NOVEMBER 6th, 1916.
Regular semi-monthly meeting of the City Council, November
6th, 1916. Mayor Putnam presiding and the following named council-
men answered to roll call; Miller, Wolff, Henry, Swedenburg, Ost-
berg, Brown and Bateman. Councilmen Underwood, Mishler and Math-
ews and City Attorney Crowther absent.
Councilman Miller moved that the reading of the minutes be
dispensed with. Motion adopted.
Dr. Harmon of the Kansas Gtesleyan University appeared before
the Council and objected to the dance that was advertised to be

given in honor of Company "h, . No action taken.
The matter of sending a man to Buffalo to superintend the test-
ing of the brick was generally discussed. Councilman Ostberg moved
that the City send a man to do the work, and on roll call the motion
was lost.
Councilman Wolff moved that the City use the tester of Watts &
Amerman that had been used heretofore and test the brick themselves.
The matter was referred to the Street and Alley Committee with power
to act.
Councilman Brown moved that the Chairman of the Fire Department
Committee be included on said Committee. Motion adopted.
Councilman Swedenburg called the attention of the Council to
the condition of the sidewalk on East Ash Street near the Ash Street
bridge. The matter was referred to the Sidewalk Committee for in-
vestigation.

Bids were received for 1,000 feet of fire hose, and on motion
of Councilman Brown the bid of The Eureka Fire Hose Mfg. Co., for
1,000 feet of Army Jacket Brand of fire hose at 65/, per foot was
accepted. Motion adopted.
The matter of granting citizens permission to burn 'leaves in
the afternoon, was discussed by the Council.
Councilman Brown moved that the matter be left entirely to the
Fire Chief to use his own discretion.
Chief of the Fire Department maderequest for an extra man to be
added to the department during the time required for the burning of
leaves. The matter was deferred until the Adjourned Meeting.
City Engineer submitted plans and specifications and an estimate
of cost for the extension of a sewer on Bishop Street from Thirteenth
Street to Fourteenth or Phillips Street, thence north on Fourteenth
or Phillips Street to North Street. On motion of Councilman Brown
same were adopted by the Council.
A bid from C. T. Snyder for the construction of the above
named sewer was received and on motion of Councilman Ostberg the
contract was awarded to 6. T. Snyder as per his bid.
Councilman Henry stated that there was a. tract of ground at
the corner of Seventh and Decatur Streets that could be utilized
for a voting precinct in the north precinct of the Second Ward. The
matter was deferred until the Adjourned Meeting.
On motion of Councilman Swedenburg Council adjourned until
Wednesday, November 8th, 1916.
