First regular monthly meeting of the City Council, July 6, 1914. Mayor Niquette presiding, City Attorney ti. C. `1'obey and the following named councilmen answered to roll call; Miller, Underwood, Dodds, Carney, Swedenburg, Mishler, Hanly, Hasler, Benson and Mathews. The minutes of the Second Regryl_ar Monthly Meet ins; of June 15th, 1914, and the Special Called Meeting of June 26t1i, 1914, were read and ap.-roved as read. Street and Alley Committee reported unf.vorable on the proposition for the City to expend any money in widening the alley directly east of the Walnut str'e-L bridEe, for the use of the Street Car Company. Street and Alley Cor.imittee reported favorable on the location of an arc light at the corner of Highlond arid Wilson avenue, arrd the City Clerk was instructed to notify the company of such action. (Ten) Nays:(None) On motion of Councilman Dodds, the resolution was adopted as read by the following vote; Ayes: Miller, Underwood, Dodds, Carney, Swedenburg, Mishler, Hanly, Hagler, Benson and Mathews. (Ten) Nays: (:None) Sidewalk Committee reported unfavorable on the petition .for a. sidewalk on the east side of Phillips street, from the south side of South street to the north side of Morrison avenue; alsor on the petition for a sidewalk for a sidewalk on the east side of Fifth street, beginriing at the south line of Lot 0, Blk. 1., Santa Fe Park addition, to the north side of Crawford aven- ue, Sidewalk Committee reported by ordinance entitled, "An ordinance pro- viding for the construction of certain sidewalk in the city of Salina, Ilan s,as, on the west side of Lots seven (7) and twenty (20) in Sweeney's Ad- dition." On motion of Councilman I�il_1_er the ordinance was read and adopt- ed by sections, and on its final adoption the roll. was called and. the fol- lowinf, vote was had; Ayes: Miller, Underwood, Dodds, Carney, Swedenburg, Mishler, Hanly, Hagler, Benson and Mathews. (Ten) Nays: (None) The Mayor approved the same and is numbered 1775. Councilman Dodds, moved that the Strect Commissioner construct a fill. against the sidewalk on east Ash street, opposite the St. John's Hos- pital. Councilman Hanly moved that the Building Committee be instructed to remodel the Fifth street hose house, to accommodate the holding of the elections on the ground floor. Councilman Hanly moved that all firemen that have been in service one year or over, be given ten (10) days vacation on full pay. Mayor N iqu ett e appointed Robt . N. Camp, Fire Chief, and on motion of Councilman Dodds, was confirmed. The committee on Public Health was instructed to see if a place could bo secured for the handling of small pox patients. Councilman Dodds, moved that the City Engineer prepare pland and spe- cifications for a Storm Sewer on Crawford and Highland avenue, in advance of the proposed highland avenue paving. Councilman Dodds moved that the City Engineer be authorized to em- ploy a man to clean the sewerage system of the city. A petition for the re -construction, and placing the walk on grade and line on the south side of Ash street from the bridge to Oakdale Avenue, was received and referred to the Sidewalk Committee. A petition for the construction of a s ide .talk on the west side of Penn avenue, between Iron avenue and Johnstown avenue, beginning at the south end of Lot 14, Block 4 on Johnstown avenue, was received and referred to the Sidewalk Committee. Councilman Carney moved that the Street and Alley Committee be in- structed to make an investigation, and such recommendations as they deern advisable to handle the hack and transfer wagons of the city; also recom- mendations as to the standing of automobiles on business streets.
