Mayor Niquette presiding, City Attorney II. C. `1'obey °rid the following named coun- cilmen answered. to roll call: Miller, Hansen, Brick, Swedenberr,, Iianly, Stevenson and Benson. Councilmen Peck, Dodds and Studebaker absent. On motion of Councilman Miller, the reading of the minutes was dis- pensed with. On motion of Councilman Stevenson the rules of order were -suspended, and a permit was granted unto John Gates for the construction -of a. feed - yard on Lot No. 128, Fifth street. Motion adopted by the following vote; Ayes: Miller, Hansen, Frick, Swedenberg, Hanly, D'tevens on. and Benson. (Seven) Nays: (None) Councilmen Peck, Dodc:_s, and Studebaker absent. Mayor Niquette submitted his veto to Ordinance No. 1140 as follows: Salina, Kansas. Jan.5, '14. To the members of the Council: Salina, KansL.s. Gentlemen: I am herewith returning to you, with my disapl)roval and veto, Ordinance No. 1740, being an ordinance calling a special election in the city of Salina, on Tuesday, the 10th dz:y of February, 1914, on the adoption of Commission Government for said city. From the inquiry and investigation I have made, I am unable to find such a sentiment in favor of the calling of this election at this time, that :rould justify the trouble and expense of such election; and I therefore veto such ordinance. Respectfully, E. Niauette, Mayor. On motion of Councilman Brick, i. P. Anderson, a member of the Fire Department, was granted a two months vacation on full pay, on account of sickness. Mayor Niquette submitted the name of Ellen Nyberg as City Stenog- rapher for the balance of the term. On motion of Councilman Miller, the appointment was confirmed. The salary placed at 66W50.00 per month. Mo- tion adopted. An ordinance was introduced entitled, "An ordinance amending sub- sections (21) and (22) of Ordinance No. 1688, and repealing such sub -sect- ions of 'Section (2) so amended." On motion of Councilman 4 venson the rules of order were suspended for its consideration by the following vote; Ayes: Miller, Hansen, Brick, Swedenberg, Hanly, Stevenson and Benson. (Seven) Mays: (None) Councilmen Peck, Dodds and Studebaker absent. On motion of Councilman Hanly the ordinance was read and adopted by sections, and on its final adoption the roll was called and the follow- in;7 vote was had; Ayes: Miller, Hansen, Brick, Swedenber, Hanly, Steven- son and Benson. (seven) Ila.ys: (None) Councilmen Peck, Dodds and Stude- baker absent. The 110a.yor declared the ordinance duly adopted and is num- bered 1741.
