JUNE 11 1934.
Regular meeting of the Board of Commissioners June 11, 1934.
T;7eeting was called to order by i,Tayor Stevenson, the roll was called
and Commissioners Stevenson, Morey, Pafford., Peters and Spaeth and
City A ttorney Norris responded.
The minutes of the Regular meeting of June 4th, 1934 were read
and approved as read.
The following recommendation from the Vlaterworks Advisory
Board was presented:
To the Salina City Commissioners:
Upon the presentation of a petition on February 19, 1934,
signed by Salina residents asking that an effort be made to secure a
soft water supply from the hills north of Salina, your honorable body
on that date referred the matter to the Waterworks Advisory Board
for their recommendation and consideration.
The Board at its meeting in I:larch 1934 thought it advisable
before making any recommendations to secure the services of the
State Geologist to make a Geological survey of the territory surround-
ing Salina from which it might be economically possible to secure a
soft water supply. The Board was fortunate in securing the services
of 1,1r. Kenneth K. Landes Assistant State GeoloList, to make the
survey and file a report with the Board. Mr. Landes came to Salina
and made a survey of the area within a radius of ten miles of S-alina, and
filed a report of his findings with the Board on May 7., 1934.
The 3oard after studying the contents of TYr. Landes' rport are
of the ooinion that a soft water supply sufficient to meet the needs
of the City could not be procured within an ecomonical radius of
the City. It is the opin16n'of the Board that a soft water supply for
the City would be of great benefit. They are also of the opinion
that the only means of securing an adequate supply of soft 1-iiater would
be the installation of softening e,.iuipment in connection with the
present supply. Since the installation of such equipment or even if
a natural soft water supply was available it would necessitate a bond
issue we doubt, owing; to the present economical conditions, whether the
tax payers are now ready to vote bonds for such an improvement.
Respectfully submitted
