ANNUAL REPORT - 2003
The Salina Public Library Board of Trustees met 12 times during 2003. One of the
biggest challenges in a few years was the loss of over $85,000 in LA VTR money
from the state. The Board made adjustments in the General Fund Budget, which
included significant cuts to specific line items and the transfer of some expenditures
to the Fines & Miscellaneous account.
Continuing to follow the Strategic Plan 2000-2004, here is a list of some activities
during 2003:
. Developed plans for a small expansion to add a Technology Center.
. Received a grant from the Earl Banes Foundation for a Digital Design Studio
. Installed a new Consumer Information Center
. Circulated over 541,000 books and other materials, a 10% increase.
. Added over 13,000 new items to the collection.
. Conducted a series of writing workshops and programs
. Received a positive and clean audit from Varney & Assoc. of Manhattan.
. Reviewed and updated library policies.
. Continued co-sponsorship of the Storyteller's Stage and Poetry Series, with
the Arts & Humanities Commission.
. Redesigned the Kid Zone web pages.
. Continued to conduct around 50 free computer classes each month.
. Migrated the library automation operating system from Unix to Windows.
. Implemented a new format for the annual staff in-service training day in
which 39 staff in teams of 3 visited nearly 50 community organizations
with information about the library.
. Expanded outreach by taking programs, summer reading materials and books
out to pre-school and day care centers.
. Implemented the Friends sponsored Rides to the Library on OCCK buses.
. Continue traditional Storytime and Summer Reading Programs for children, as well as Fall
Reading Programs for adults; two monthly book discussions, genealogy workshops; a Teen
Advisory Board and Homebound Delivery Services and much more.
Public library services continue to grow into a healthy mix of traditional book and
reading services enhanced with popular media materials and combined with improved
information access through technology and computer classes. Weare encouraged by
the increased use of the library and look forward to a great year of service in 2004.
