Engine #1 F-850 Ford wll,OOO GPM 2-Stage Class nA" Pump - 1963
Annual fire pump test October 24, 1972. Installed new regulator for pump
control panel. Replaced mufflers and extension pipes, bolts in manifold
connection to exhaust. Replaced barrel assembly on left hand pump. Installed
new tarp on hose bed, nylon straps and buckles. Removed booster tank from truck,
welded and repaired leak in front of tank. Primed and painted booster tank,
replaced tank back on truck. Flushed booster tank, disassembled nozzles and
flushed nozzles of rust and corrosion particles caused from water in booster tank.
Repainted equipment and treated all wood handles on tools and equipment. Degreased,
greased, changed oil and filter, checked gear boxes, checked anti-freeze, cleaned
and waxed truck regularly. Total cost of materials used was $168.92.
Engine #2 F-850 Ford wll,OOO GPM Class "An Pump - 1966

Annual fire pump test October 24, 1972. Tightened broken hose on right front
wheel. Removed right front wheel, rebuilt to brake wheel cylinders, cleaned brake
linings. Replaced one new inter-bearing and race, repacked two front wheels with
new grease and bled all brake lines. Installed C.D. 2500 W auxiliary generator
in rear compartment. Moved scott mask compartment box to the inside of compart-
ment. Installed one 220 Volt outlet receptical on generator. Made one starter
rope for generator. Serviced air breather. Installed new plugs, points and
condenser. Checked engine timing. Removed and resoldered small water flow pipe
on bottom side of radiator. Replaced 5-amp fuse on turn signals. Installed one
new "0" ring in water filter. Changed spark plug in homelite auxiliary generator.
Repainted deluge set. Painted hand tools and equipment. Degreased, greased,
changed oil and filter, checked gear boxes, checked anti-freeze, cleaned and
waxed regularly. Total cost of materials used was $53.89.
Engine #3 F-700 Ford Pumper, 500 GPM 2-Stage Centrifugal Class "B" Pump - 1950
There was no annual pump accomplished on this apparatus. Replaced rear tail
light. Replaced blinker switch. Replaced leather strap on exhaust fan holder.
Replaced alternator outlet. Repaired switch on blinker lights. Repaired dimmer
switch. Built adapter for alternator outlet. Removed one hand line nozzle and
placed it on Engine #41. Changed oil and filter and other liquids regularly.
Greased, degreased, maintained liquid levels, checked gear boxes, maintained
anti-freeze levels. Washed, waxed and cleaned regularly. Total cost of materials
used was $3.57.
Ladder #1 - American LaFrance 100' Aerial w/750 GPM Pump - 1947

Annual fire pump test October 24, 1972. Repaired right rear wheel seal. Replaced
short section of 2~-inch hose to ladder pipe. Repaired one rung on third fly of
100 foot ladder. Replaced bulbs in spotlights and tail lights. Replaced seals,
bearings and cones in right rear wheel. Cleaned and painted deluge set red.
Degreased and greased chassis and ladder twice. Changed engine oil and filter
twice. Changed oil in pump gear box. Checked oil in transmission and differential.
Added three gallons of anti-freeze. Cleaned and waxed regularly. Total cost of
parts and repairs was $101.92.

Squad #2 - 1944 International with 100 GPM Front-Mount Pump
Set the valves. Replaced the head gasket. New muffler. Replaced old battery
with new battery. New packing in fire pump. Packed the pump shaft. Greased
and degreased. Changed oil filter. Checked gear boxes. Maintained anti -freeze.
Maintained all liquid levels such as water and brake fluid. Washed, waxed and
cleaned regularly. Total cost of materials used was $26.50.
Squad #1 - GMC w/300 GPM Pump - 1955

No pump test accomplished on this apparatus. Replaced burned out warning light.
Replaced top and bottom radiator hose on pump engine. Replaced 5/8-inch heater
hose on pump engine. Soldered leaks in bottom of radiator. OVerhauled starter.
Removed starter and had it rebuilt. Replaced battery in Squad #1 wheat light.
Had heads planed, valves ground and reseated. Replaced two new exhaust valves.
Replaced lower radiator hose and new fan belt on truck engine. Replaced new
six-volt battery in truck engine. Repaired slow leak in left rear dual. Brazed
hole in small pipe between tank circulator valve and engine cooler valve. Gave
truck complete tune-up. This consisted of points, plugs and condenser. Installed
two new tires on the front end. Replaced one new wheel. Replaced sight gauge on
water tank (9/l6-inch clear plastic hose). Repaired leak in right rear outside
dual wheel. Installed new voltage regulator. Fixed a leak in water tank.
Replaced muffler and clamps on pump engine. Installed new twelve-volt battery
on pump engine. One battery hold-down. Replaced the air cleaner in the truck
engine. Greased and packed the rear spotlight ball joints. Greased and
degreased, changed oil and filter, checked the gear boxes, maintained all liquid
levels, such as water, brake fluid, and maintained anti-freeze. Washed, waxed
and cleaned regularly. Total cost of materials used was $338.04.
Foam Truck #1 - 1968 Dodge D-500, 202 Horsepower, 318 Cu. In.
This apparatus carries liquid, powder, foam generator equipment. Replaced
spark plugs. Changed oil, and filter. Greased and degreased chassis. Checked
anti-freeze and gear boxes. Waxed regularly. Cost of repairs was $6.24.
Chief's Car - 1971 Ford Station Wagon
Rotated all tires on station wagon. Degreased, greased, changed oil and filter.
Checked transmission and differential oil level, anti-freeze. Cleaned and waxed
regularly. No parts or equipment expense.
Assistant Chief's Car - 1964 Ford, 2-door Sedan

Replaced air cleaner. Rebuilt all wheel cylinders. One new master cylinder.
Repacked front wheel bearings. Replaced two grease seals in front wheels.
Adjusted brakes. Removed and replaced negative battery cable. Replaced muffler
on left side and one clamp. Changed oil and filter. Greased and degreased,
checked liquid levels, checked gear box, maintained all liquid levels. Maintained
anti-freeze levels. Cleaned, waxed and washed regularly. Total cost of materials
was $43.72.

Inspector #1 - 1970 Chevrolet Station Wagon
Replaced fuel pump. Installed new American battery. Changed oil four times.
Changed filter three times. Put in two gallons of anti-freeze and new 180 degree
thermostat. Put a can of Casite through carburetor. Installed a water vaporizer.
Two new tires on the rear. Two new tires on the front. Filled windshield
washer with liquid. Changed the air filter. Replaced the left muffler and
clamps. Installed two new ball joints and aligned front end. Added a pint of
brake fluid. Greased, degreased, checked transmission and differential, cleaned
and waxed regularly. Total cost of materials was $209.34.
Inspector #2 - 1960 Chevrolet Station Wagon
Replaced old battery at no cost. Replaced three battery cable ends. Rebuilt
carburetor and replaced two manifold stud bolts. Replaced the negative
battery cable. Adjusted front and rear brakes. Rebuilt the starter. Degreased,
greased, changed oil and filter, checked anti-freeze, checked transmission and
differential. Cleaned and waxed regularly. Total cost of materials used was
$62.70.
utility #1 - 1972 International 1210 3/4 Ton Pickup

New apparatus delivered to Salina January 25, 1972. Placed in service at
Station #1 on February 4, 1972. Apparatus is equipped with 8-foot bed, V-304
engine, heavy-duty rear springs, heavy duty front and rear shock absorbers,
61 Amp alternator, dual electric horns, fresh air heater and defroster, pair
Junior West Coast mirrors, T407 3-speed automatic transmission, rear step
bumpers, 2 - 7.50 x 16 6-ply tires on front, 2 - 7.50 x 16 6-ply Mud and Snow
tires on rear, RA-16 rear axle, Model #1 Vis-A-Bar with CP-25 speaker and
Model PA-15-A electronic siren, Model #1 Delta utility box, 1 - 15 lb. C02 fire
extinguisher. Pair Junior mirrors were removed and one small door mirror
installed on left door. Greased, changed oil and filter, checked transmission
and differential oil level, anti-freeze, cleaned and waxed regularly. Total cost
of truck and equipment was $3,014.95.
Engine #21 - D-800 Dodge w/750 GPM Class "A" Pump - 1957
Annual fire pump test October 25, 1972. Replaced turn signal flasher and fuse.
Installed new master cylinder, two new wheel cylinders on both front wheels and
new kits in rear wheel cylinders. Relined all brake shoes and turned all drums.
All new wheel seals. Removed front wheels and ground backing plateimaterials
used were one wheel bearing and two wheel seals. Rebuilt carburetor. Replaced
points, condenser, distributor cap, plug wire insulators and spark plugs.
Degreased, greased, changed oil, oil filter, air filter, checked gear boxes,
checked anti-freeze, cleaned and waxed regularly. Total cost of materials used
was $211.38.

Engine #31 - F-950 Ford wll,OOO GPM Class "A" Pump - 1968
Annual fire pump test October 26, 1972. Installed two "U" shaped roller
brackets on the front bumper. Replaced defective floor button on federal
interceptor. Installed new hose clamps on hose to auxiliary cooler. Replaced
and tightened packing on fire pump. Built water strainer for fill opening in
booster tank. Replaced "0" ring seal in FFF Fog Foam Turret nozzle. Dis-
connected manual choke on chassis engine. Replaced warning flasher unit.
Installed four new l2-Volt batteries. Replaced front tires. Replaced choke
cable. Welded adjustment connector for the right side discharge. Replaced
truck engine mufflers and tailpipes. Replaced tailpipes on pump engine. Installed
tune-up kit in pump engine. Adjusted left rear discharge gate. Installed tune-
up kit in truck engine. Degreased, greased, changed oil, waxed and checked anti-
freeze regularly. Total cost of parts was $475.18.
Squad #31 - 530A - 1952
Leased Army truck with Barton front-mount 500 GPM pump, 146 Horsepower, 331 Cu.
In. Annual fire pump test October 25, 1972. Installed new three-way cock valve
on vacuum pump primer and tightened pump packing. Replaced l5-feet of 5/8-inch
heater hose and one 1/8 brass plug on pump oil tank. Repaired left front tire.
Repaired direct ground on contact points. Installed new muffler and tailpipe.
Degreased, greased, changed oil, cleaned and waxed regularly. Total cost of
service and repairs was None.

Utility #31 - 1959 Ford Pickup
Cleaned and repaired radiator, flushed engine block. Degreased, greased, changed
oil and filter, checked transmission and differential oil level, checked anti-
freeze, cleaned and waxed truck regularly. No parts or equipment cost.
Engine #32 - 1929 Ahrens-Fox
Piston-type positive displacement - Class "B" 1,350 GPM (operating condition).
This apparatus is retired from service due to extreme age and condition. It is
used only for parades and exhibitions. Adjusted clutch and replaced two battery
cables and four new bolts. Degreased, greased, changed oil, cleaned and waxed
regularly. Total cost of repairs was $3.96.
Engine #41 - F-800 Ford Class B w/500 GPM 2-stage Centrifugal - 1958

Annual pump test October 25, 1972. Replaced four new tires on the rear wheels.
Rebuilt generator. Replaced the gasket behind the left door handle. Adjusted
right hand door and striker plate. Used can of STP. Replaced the valve seals.
Replaced spark plugs. Adjusted all valves. Replaced valve cover gaskets. Put
in new headlight switch and right turn signal indicator bulb. Installed new door
handle inside the right door. Recoupled booster line. Installed new battery and
two battery bolts. Replaced Hydro-vac and rebuilt right rear wheel brakes. In-
stalled points, plugs and condenser and spark plug wires. Repaired master
cylinder. Repaired clutch hydraulic cylinder on Hydro-clutch. Set timing and
bled brakes. Changed oil and filter as necessary. Maintained all liquid levels,

FIRE INSPECTION BUREAU SUMMARY - 1972

The Fire Inspection Bureau Annual Report is compiled from the twelve (12) Monthly
Reports, which were submitted to the City Administration at the end of each month
for the year of 1972. The Monthly Reports are compiled from the Fire Inspector I s
"Daily Log" and Fire Inspection Bureau files.
For a comprehensive addition to this report as to the many activities carried out
by the Fire Inspectors throughout the year, we wish to refer you to the National
Fire Protection "Annual Contest Entry Album" as submitted to the National Fire
Protection Association by the Salina Fire Department. At this time, we are awaiting
return of this album after being judged, which when received will be kept on file
at Fire Station #1. We have entered this contest each year since 1949, which has
resulted in Certificates of Merit for each year since that time. These certificates
range from Honorable Mention to First Place, with numerous second and third place
ratings for the State of Kansas. These are awarded for outstanding activity in
Fire Prevention by the National Fire Protection Association. OUr recent yearly
awards have been as follows:

During the year of 1972, the Salina Fire Department Fire Inspection-Prevention Bureau
consisted of three (3) Fire Inspectors working a standard Fire Department twenty-four
(24) hour tour of duty (One (1) Fire Inspector on each of the three (3) shifts). Fire
Inspectors consisted of Carney C. Foster, Laverne Brockway and Russell W. Caswell,
under the direction of Assistant Fire Chief Gordon A. Nichols.
Routine fire inspections are carried out during normal business hours, or from
9:30 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday thru Friday, taking into consideration many interruptions
due to other non-routine calls involving other commitments, which consist of
emergency inspections (request inspections, gas checks, complaints, Fire Prevention
Programs, etc.). Fire Inspectors, when away from Headquarters Fire Station on "duty
calls" are in constant contact via radio communication by means of a pocket radio
receiver which allows them to be reached for emergency calls at a moments notice.
While in the fire station, day or night, they normally answer fire alarms as
additional firefighters on the Aerial Ladder apparatus, which proceeds to all fire
alarms involving business buildings, hospitals, schools, industry, warehouses, etc.
On all fire alarms resulting in fire damage where the immediate cause is listed as
"unknown", a fire scene investigation is conducted and photographs taken by the
Fire Inspection Bureau to make every effort to determine the cause of the fire.
