• Engine #1 Ford F -850 W /1,000 GPM Class "A" Pum
Annual fire pump test August 28, 1970. Repaired Deluge set. Mounted new exhaust fan.
Installed new muffler and tail pipe extensions. Installed new brackets for booster
line nozzles. Repaired turn signals. Repaired muffler system. Installed 200',
12" hose on left side. Repaired leak in water tank. Repaired CO2 extinguisher.
Repaired regulator on Scott Air Pack. Repaired hand pumps. Replaced leather strap
on Scott Air Pack. Installed two (2) gauges on pre- connects. Replaced brass fitting
on gauge connections. Wired electrical starter on portable generator. Installed
gas line shut -off on portable generator. Installed two (2) new batteries. Replaced
tarp strap and radiator hoses. Adjusted brakes. Tune up engine 2. Replaced new
points, condenser, plugs and plug wires. Checked anti- freeze. Degreased, greased,
changed oil and oil filter, checked all gear boxes twice, added 1 can casi.te to gas
tank, cleaned and waxed regularly.
Engine #2 Ford F -850 W /1,000 GPM Class "A" Pump
Annual fire pump test July 28, 1970. Installed drip pans under front and rear
pump seals. Repaired valves and demand regulators on Scott Air Packs. Cleaned
gas tank and carburetor on portable generator. Replaced battery cable and solonoid
switch on primer pump. Also rebuilt primer pump motor. Repaired electrical wiring
on rear compartment light. Also repaired extension cords. Replaced batteries in
hand lights. Complete overhaul of pump transmission. Replaced wiper blades.
Repaired vacuum clutch cylinder and loose steering wheel. Degreased, greased,
changed oil in engine and pump gear case twice, used two (2) cans of Casite, cleaned
and waxed regularly.
Engine #3 Ford F -7 W /500 GPM Class "B" Pump
Annual fire pump test, September 3, 1970. Replaced leather strap on hose tarpaulin.
Added one (1) can of Bars Leak to radiator, changed oil twice, changed oil filter,
degreased, regreased chassis, changed oil in pump gear box and checked transmission
and differential. Waxed. Installed used battery taken from Engine #1, added one
(1) gallon of anti- freeze. Rebuilt regulator on Scott Air Tank.
Ladder #1 - American LaFrance 100' Aerial W/750 GPM Pum
Annual fire pump test August 12, 1970. Added twenty (20) gallons of hydraulic oil,
rebuilt hydraulic pump and checked ladder. Repair (2) hydraulic lines. Removed
left rear wheel and replaced brake cylinder. Parked wheel bearing. Removed left
rear wheel, replaced inside grease seal, removed right rear wheel and replaced
wheel cylinder and inner and outer seals. Bled brakes. Replaced starter rope
handle on K -12 saw. Changed oil in engine - transfer case. Installed new oil
filter. Replaced points and condenser in both distributors. Degreased and greased
chassis. Checked transmission and differential.. Cleaned and reoiled ladder.
Repaired hydraulic swivel on turntable. Installed two (2) warning lights on rear
of truck. Added two (2) gallons of anti - freeze.
Squad #1 G,1C W 1300 GPM Pump
• Installed muffler and pipe extension and vacuum hose on GNIC. Adjusted clutch.
Replaced plugs, two (2) taillights and lens and globe on top. Degreased and greased
twice. Changed oil and oil filter in G.,.C. Changed pump grease in gear box.
Replaced points and condenser, upper and lower radiator hoses. Waxed truck twice.
Replaced screws in back of pressure gauge of Scott Air Pack. Repaired hand pump
bracket. Repaired right side gas tank. Changed anti- freeze in truck engine and
pump engine. Replaced four (4) tires on rear axle of tandem. Replaced axe handle.

New apparatus delivered to Salina February 2.0, 1970. Placed in service at Salina
Fire Station #1 at 8:00 AM February 26, 1970. Installed two (2) new mud and snota
tires. Changed oil and filter twice. Serviced windshield washers. One (1) can
Casite through carburetor. Cleaned regularly.

Tires -- New (H78 X 15)
Vehicle Equipped with -- Air conditioner, Motorola Mocom 10 radio,
Vis -A -Bar, C -1,24 PA siren and speaker, 1 Wheat spotlight
_Rear Compartment Equipment -- One (1) model 6,000 - B4A Scott Air
Pack, Chief's firefighting protective equipment, ABC Extinguisher and
Fire blanket.
Assistant Chief's Car - 1964 Ford, 2 -door Sedan
Repaired hand light and brake system. Replaced battery. Installed new mufflers
and crankcase ventilator hose. Replaced shock absorbers. Adjusted brakes. New
mud and snow tires on rear. Replaced two (2) front tires. Mounted extinguisher
in truck. Added two (2) gallons of anti - freeze. Changed oil in transmission and
cleaned filter in transmission. Changed oil three (3) times; changed oil filter
twice. Checked differential and transmission. Added one (1) quart Rislone in
• crankcase. Cleaned and waxed regularly.
Inspector #1 - 1959 Chevrolet Station Wagon
Replaced fan belt. Oiled, cleaned and checked brushes on generator. Replaced
radiator hose and water pump. Released the shifting lever. Replaced generator
armature and brushes. Changed spark plugs, checked points and timing. Changed oil.
Added one (1) An Bars Leak. Cleaned regularly.
Inspector #2 - 1960 Chevrolet Station Wagon
Rebuilt generator. Replaced exhaust system. Installed four (4) new tires. Turned
rear brake drums and installed new shoes and new shock absorbers. Poured can of
C.asite through carburetor. Degreased, greased chassis. Changed oil and oil filter
twice. Cleaned and waxed regularly.
Utility #1 F -100, 1959 Ford z Ton Pick -up
Replaced ignition switch. Repaired burned wiring under dash and repaired windshield
wiper switch. Installed fuse holder. Cleaned and lubricated dimmer switch. Washed
and polished.
Utility #2 - 1943 International Flat Bed
Replaced fan belt. Repainted inside of truck bed. Repaired log chain. Degreased,
. greased, changed oil and anti- freeze. Cleaned and waxed regularly.
Engine #21 D -800 Dodge W/750 GPM Class "A" Pump
Annual fire pump test August 31, 1970. Repaired both red blinker lights. Replaced
upper radiator hose. Welded oil dip stick. Installed new battery. Repair master

pump gear case. Repaired rear -view mirror bracket. Cleaned and waxed regularly.
Engine #31 Ford FF950 W /1,000 GPM Class "A" Pump
Annual fire pump test September 14, 1970. Repair electrical system from pump
engine and foam equipment. Made adaptor 21--" to garden hose. Repaired monitor
nozzle twice. Drained and flushed foam tank. Installed two (2) new battery
ground cables. Replaced oil in pump gear. case. Changed oil in truck engine.
Changed oil in pump engine twice. Tune up pump engine. One (1) can Casite
through carburetor. Put new packing in governor control in cab.
Squad #31 Leased truck Army 530 W /500 GPM Class "B" Pump
Annual fire pump test September 24, 1970. Degreased and greased chassis. Changed
oil in pump gear box. Drained and flushed radiator and added three (3) gallons of
anti - freeze. Cleaned and waxed regularly.
Utility #31 - 1959 Ford Pick-up+
Replaced anti- freeze and checked. Greased chassis. Installed cross -over pipe and
muffler and tail pipe. Adjusted tappets.
Engine #32 Ahrens Fox W/1,350 GPM Pump
Repaired broken starter and lubricated same. Cleaned and waxed regularly.
Engine #41 Ford F -800 W /500 GPM Pump
Annual pump test September 8, 1970. Repaired booster line nozzle and shut -off
valves. Replaced brake shoes on right rear wheel. Replaced muffler on portable_
generator. Tune up engine, replace spark plugs, rebuild power steering assembly.
Tune up portable generator engine. Repaired hood latch, Replaced booster tank.
Repaired and balanced drive line. Replaced pump packing, tail and stop light bulbs.
Degreased and greased chassis, changed oil and oil filter, checked differential and
transmission twice. Replaced anti - freeze. Cleaned and waxed regularly.

FIRE, INSPECTION BUREAU SUMMARY:
The Fire Inspection Bureau Annual Report is compiled from the twelve (12) monthly
reports, which were submitted to the City Administration at the end of each month
for the year of 1970. The monthly reports are compiled from the Fire Inspector's
"Daily Log" and Fire Inspection Bureau Files.
For a comprehensive addition to this report, as to the many activities carried out
by the Fire Inspectors throughout the year, we wish to refer you to the National
Fire Protection "Annual Contest Entry Album" as submitted to the National Fire
Protection Association by the Salina Fire Department. This album has been returned
after being judged and is on file at Fire Station No. 1. We have entered this
contest each year since 1949, which has resulted in a Certificate of Merit for each
year since that time. These Certificates range from Honorable Mention to First
Place with numerous Second and Third Place ratings for the State of Kansas. These
are awarded for outstanding activity in Fire Prevention by the National Fire
Protection Association. Our recent yearly awards have been as follows:
1967 - Second Place, State of Kansas
1968 - Third Place, State of Kansas
1969 - Third Place, State of Kansas
1970 - We have received word we were
awarded Second Place, State of
Kansas, with Wichita taking First
Place and Olathe Third Place.
During the year of 1970, the Salina Fire Department Fire Inspection- Prevention
Bureau consisted of four (4) Fire Inspectors divided into three (3) shifts
working a standard Fire Department twenty -four (24) hour tour of duty. Members
consist of Fire Inspectors Carney C. Foster, Laverne Brockway, Jerome 0. Schmidt
and Russell W. Caswell. Routine fire inspections are carried out during normal
business hours, or from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday thru Friday, with many
interruptions due to other non - routine calls involving other commitments, which
consist of emergency inspections (request inspections, gas checks, complaints,
Fire Prevention Programs, etc.). Fire Inspectors, when away from the station on
"duty calls ", are in constant contact with Headquarters Fire Station by means
of a pocket radio receiver which allows them to be reached for emergency calls
at a moments notice. While in the station, day or night, they normally answer
fire alarms as additional firefighters on the Aerial Ladder Truck, which proceeds
to any fire alarms involving business buildings, schools, industry, warehouses,
etc., when so directed by the Headquarters Operations Captain.
On all fire alarms resulting in fire damage where the immediate cause is listed
as "unknown ", a fire scene investigation is conducted by the Fire Inspection
Bureau to make every effort to determine the cause of the fire.
