SALINA FIRE DEPARTMENT TRAINING (1969)
The Training Report is divided into four phases:
Apparatus Drill
Indoor Class - School
Recruit Training
Special Schools or Demonstrations
The next three pages reflect clock hours of training with the parti-
cular apparatus or class. Outdoor drills are conducted each Monday
through Friday, from April 15 to October 15.
During drill sessions hose lines are connected, hydrant to pumper, and
discharge lines are extended from the pumper. Discharge lines include
booster; one and one half inch, two inch and two and one half inch hand -
lines; two and one half and three inch, single and double lines to heavy
appliances. Lines are advanced over hand ladders and over fire escape
and vertical ladders on drill tower. Pump operator then supplies the
correct pressure, depending on size, type and elevation of nozzle.
The Aerial and large hand ladders are used to effect simulated rescue,
with firemen takiner turns as the, "victim ".
All small tools, rope and equipment, used by the Fire Service, are used
with situations set -up to resemble, as near as possible, actual condi-
tions.
Classroom instruction is conducted Monday through Friday January I to
April 14 and October. 16 to December 24 and consists of school in all
phases listed using books, manuals and visual aid purchased from, or
supplied by the following; Kansas State Fire Marshal, National Fire
Protection Association, American Red Cross, U.S. Civil Defense, Fire
Technology Department of Oklahoma State University and many interested
insurance companies and other private business.
A special recruit program was set -up providing elementary instruction
in all subjects listed.
The Fire Department also participates in Public Service Schools, concern-
ing Fire Prevention, Rescue and Radiation with Civil Defense and First
Aid,

Ladder #1, the 35' Ext. Ladder, the 50' Bangor Ladder, are used

FIRE INSPECTION BUREAU SUN1 ARY:
The Fire Inspection Bureau Annual Report is compiled from the twelve (12)
monthly reports, which were submitted to the City Administration at the end
of each month for the year of 1969. The monthly reports are compiled from
the Fire Inspectors "Daily Log" and Fire inspection Bureau Files,
For a comprehensive addition to this report, as to the many activities
carried out by the Fire Inspectors throughout the year, we wish to refer you
to the National Fire Protection "Annual Contest Entry Album" as submitted to
the National Fire Protection Association by the Salina Fire Department, This
department has entered this contest each year since 1949 resulting in a
Certificate of Merit for each year since that time. These Certificates range
from Honorable Mention to First Place with numerous Second and Third Place
ratings for the State of Kansas. These are awarded for outstanding activity in
Fire Prevention by the National Fire Protection Association. Our recent yearly
awards have been as follows:

During the major portion of the year of 1969, the Salina Fire Department Fire
Inspection- Prevention Bureau was comprised of five (5) Fire Inspectors divided
into three (3) shifts working a standard Fire Department twenty -four (24) hour
tour of duty. Members consisted of Chief Inspector Gordon A. Nichols; Fire
Inspectors Paul W. Day, Carney C. Foster, Laverne Brockway and Jerome 0, Schmidt.
Due to a change in the Fire Department Administration and promotions, the present
Fire Inspectors consist of Carney C. Foster, Laverne Brockway, Jerome 0, Schmidt
and Russell W. Caswell, Routine inspections are carried out during normal
business hours, or from 9:00 A.M. to .5:00 P.M. (Monday thru Friday), with many
interruptions due to other non - routine calls involving other commitments which
consist of emergency inspections (request inspections, gas checks, complaints,
etc,), Fire Inspectors, when away from the station on "duty calls ", are in
constant contact with Headquarters Fire. Station by means of a pocket radio
receiver which allows them to be reached for emergency calls at a moment's
notice. While in the station (day or night) , they normally answer fire alarms
as additional firefighters on the Aerial Ladder Truck, which proceeds to any
fire alarms involving business buildings, schools, industry, warehouses, etc,,
when so directed by the Headquarters Operations Captain,
On all fire alarms resulting in fire damage where the immediate cause is listed
as unknown, a fire scene investigation is conducted by the Fire Inspection
Bureau to make every effort to determine the cause of the fire,

Engine #1 Ford F -850 W /1000 G.P.M. Class "A" Pump
Annual fire pump test October 14, 1969. Installed new Walkie- Talkie radio.
Replaced leather strap hose tarpulin. Filled out notches in fog nozzle for
water pattern that was damaged. Replaced strap on Scott Air Pak. Repaired
leather strap on hosebed tarp. Adjusted clutch linkage at clutch arm to allow
sufficient "free travel ". Degreased, greased, changed oil and filter, checked
anti - freeze and waxed regularly.
Engine #2 Ford F -850 W /1000 G.P.M. Class "A" Pump
Annual fire pump test October 16, 1969. Removed old linkage from remote
clutch release and built new linkage. Installed new batteries in hand lanterns.
Installed two '(2) new handles on cutting torch case. Repaired oxygen regulator
gauge. Tightened pump packing on front end. Degreased, greased, changed oil
and filter, checked anti- freeze and waxed regularly.
Engine #3 Ford 700 W /500 G.P.M. Pump
Annual fire pump test October 16, 1969. Removed both manifold pipes and
replaced gaskets on flanges. Welded two (2) holes in pipe. Replaced hoses on
Vacuum Horns. Fixed leak in hand pump. Changed all radiator hoses. Replaced
leather strap on rear end of tarp. Degreased, greased, changed oil and filter,
checked anti - freeze and waxed regularly.
Ladder #1 - American LaFrance 100' Aerial W/750 G.P.M. Pump
Annual f ire pump test October 14, 1969. Changed oil in the hydro system on
ladder. Removed, replaced exhaust pipe and muffler. Built muffler hangars.
Re- routed and fastened gas line from tank to pump. Degreased Aerial ladder and
washed. Re -oiled ladder and checked. Changed oil and filter, checked anti- freeze
and waxed regularly.
Squad #1 G.M.C. W /300 G.P.M. Pump
Installed two (2) new Clayton Mark ball valves in reel line. Installed new
battery, new ground cable and set of points and condenser. Removed front duals on
right side and repaired leak in water tank. Adjusted clutch. Replaced fan belt.
Removed part of rubber seal out of fog nozzle on right hand booster reel. Also
same on fog nozzle from left side tailboard. Cleaned and re -oiled universal plug
adapters from right rear tailboard. Replaced water pump. Replaced radiator hose,
fan belt and by -pass hose in pump engine. Cut off and repaired booster hose
connection from right reel. Installed new fan belt. Repaired turn signals with
manual cancellation. Degreased, greased, changed oil, checked anti - freeze and
waxed regularly.
Repaired left rear tandem wheel cylinders, replaced (2) U- Joints in rear
drive line, vacuum line and diaphragm in power divider booster, (3) lug bolts in
left rear hub. Replaced (1) brass ball valve and re -kited other on booster reels.
Replaced bushings in tandem walking beams, cut center out of body and built new
slip in 700 gallon water tank. Re- plumbed with new pipe from tank to pump, re-
painted truck body and chassis (RED) as required.
MATERIALS USED: (2) wheel cylinder kits, (2) U- Joints, (1) vacuum line and
diaphragm, (3) lug bolts, (1) new ball valve and (1) kit, bushings, collars and
bolt assembly for walking beams, new 10 and 12 gauge steel sheared as per sketch
for water tank, pipe and copper tubing for plumbing, plastic hose for sight gauge.
Primer and paint for body, chassis as required; acetylene cutting torch and

welding supplies as needed to complete rebuilding job.
PERSONNEL: All shifts.
REMFRKS: This truck was out of service approximately 6 weeks and was
completed and in service on December 30, 1969.
The "handy billy portable pump" was removed, so the slip in tank could
use it's space.
Squad #2 International Front Mount W /100 G.P.M. Pump
Removed engine for complete rebuilding and replaced. Removed brake
cylinders, cleaned and replaced with new kits. Cleaned and repaired radiator,
replaced battery, removed water tank and replaced with new tank, replumbed water
suction from tank to pump. Removed pump and replaced clutch assembly. Installed
two (2) new front tires and flaps in all other tires. Seat cushions were re-
covered, replaced throw -out bearings in truck clutch, built front bumper and
protector, also hand rails on tailboard of truck, hand pump holders, replaced
floor mat. Replaced steering wheel, repainted truck, inside cab, engine compartment,
etc. Installed radio. Degreased, greased, changed oil, checked anti - freeze and waxed
regularly. (Re- welded valve on back booster line. Installed pump re- circulation
system.)

1959 Chevrolet Station Wagon - Inspector #1
Set timing and points and adjusted carburetor. Fixed brake lights. One
(1) 775 x 14 Black Flyer tire. Adjusted brakes and installed bolt on stabilizer
bar. Replaced fuses in fuse panel for tail and brake lights. Degreased, greased,
changed oil and filter, checked anti - freeze and waxed regularly.
Inspector #2 1960 Chevrolet Station Wagon
Installed new tail pipe. Adjusted linkage on transmission and oiled same.
Degreased, greased, changed oil and filter, checked anti - freeze and waxed regularly.
Utility #1 1959 Ford z Ton Pick -up
Painted and installed muffler. Degreased, greased, changed oil and filter,
checked anti - freeze and waxed regularly.
Utility #2 International Flat Bed
Degreased and cleaned chassis. Checked brakes, plugs, points, transmission,
differential and battery.
Engine #21 Dodge D -800 W/750 G.P.M. Class "A" pump
Annual fire pump test October 16, 1969. Replaced a broken screw in throttle
governor. Replaced fresh air flexible hose. Removed heads on engine. Hand ground
valves, installed new head gaskets, exhaust gaskets, intake gaskets and valve cover
gaskets. Replaced starter selnoid, replaced two (2) fan belts and one (1) power
steering belt. Replaced 200' of 2" handline on left and right side. Replaced 1000'
of 22" hose on right side of hose bed. Removed hose and wooden racks from hose bed,
also floor from left side pre - connected hose bed to repair leaks in top of water
tank. Tank was cracked across back end of hose bed, also under angle iron of bed

divider on left side. Cleaned and sprayed top of tank with primer and
aluminum paint. Cleaned and repainted back compartment. Repainted running
• boards. Repainted top of tank. Cleaned, oiled, and repaired tools in rear
compartment. Replaced plug adapters with resized adapters. Installed turn

Minor servicing is accomplished by Station #3 personnel. (Army vehicle
leased from 5th Army, Fort Riley.) Degreased, greased, changed oil, checked

Degreased, greased, changed oil and filter, checked anti- freeze and waxed

Engine #41 Ford F -800 W /500 G.P.M. Pump
Annual fire pump test October 13, 1969. Installed new oil sensing unit.
Installed new belt on portable fan. Removed dual wheels and patched front end
of wheel housing. Straightened skirting of tailboard. Rivited chain to lid of
hand pump. Placed new leather in booster nozzle holder and welded holder from
left reel. Repaired plug on light plant and put radio speaker on dash. Replaced
bulbs in tail lights. Degreased, greased, changed oil and filter, checked anti-
freeze and waxed regularly.
Engine #31 Ford F -950 W /1000 G.P.M. Pump
New apparatus. Delivered to Salina November 4, 1969, Acceptance test
conducted at Salina, Kansas, on November 17, 1969. Placed in service at Salina
Fire Station #3 at 8 :00 A.M. January 17, 1970. During delivery, testing and
training, the truck was driven 787 miles and the pump engine used 34.9 hours.
Before placing the engine in service, the Saline Fire Department shop changed
oil and filters in both engines, also the following minor adjustments and repairs
were made. Replaced hydraulic line to pressure gauge in cab, installed booster
reels w /shut -off rods. Basic Specifications are the following:
