Recruit training begins with a study of "Fire Department Terminology", an IL F. P. A.
Text, continues with Salina Fire Department Station procedures, Care, Handling
and us~ of small tools.
The recruit then attends outdoor drill to learn correct method of connecting to
hydrant, laying supply lines to pumper and extelJding nozzle lines to seat of
fire. These lines may be advanced over ladders, up stairw~ys or raised with rope
lines. He learns how to control nozzles and apply .,ater or oth~r extinguishing
agent correctly.
Be learns the function of self-contained breathing apparatus. -rhir equipment allows
him to work in a toxic or low-oxygen atmosphere without breathing difficulties.
As training advances, the fireman receives more detailed instruction in all of the
following phases of operation: Rescue, casualty handling, first aid, ladder
evolutions, care and handling hose, driving emergency vehicles, pumper operation,
aerial ladder operation, underwater recovery, firefighting technique for flillIDr~ble
liquids and hazardous chemicals, pre-fire planning, municipal water supplies, Fire
Department hydraulics, ventilation, salvage and overhaul, fire prevention, and
minor related subjects.
Training films (16 MM) are borrowed from the State Fire Marshal, Insurance companies,
and interested industry.

Conducted each t~nday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from April 1 to October 31,
weather permitting. A card file is maintained for each piece of app~ratus and
individual fireman. This record system rp.flects the clock hours participation in each
phase of training.

By use of film training manuals and practice, firemen are taught how to search
for tranped victims, how to choose the correct rescue method as determined by the
condition of the victim and his environment. Methods used include:

SUMMAR.Y
The Salina Fire Depl'l.rtment "Fire Inspection-Prevention Bureau" is
comprised of Gordon Nichols (Fire Inspector, taking care of the Schilling
Area), Paul Day, Leonard Todd and H. J. i~Cabe. The Fire Inspectors, with
the exception of McCabe, work a standard tour of duty (24 Hours "on-duty" and
24 Hours "off-dutyfl.) McCabe is on duty each day, with the exception of
Saturday afternoons and Sundays. Routine Inspections are carried out during
business hours or from 9:00 A. M. to 5:00 P. M. (Monday thru Friday). The
,Inspectors are then expected to take care of emergency inspections (request
inspections, gas checks, complaints, etc.). Also, while in the Station
(day or night) they are required to answer any fire alarr,1s involving business
buildings, schools, industry, warehouses, etc. (except the residence or
small fires). A new Fire Inspector (Carney Foster) is being trained for the
duties of such position. Considerable study is required as well as "Field
Experience" in handling situations that may be encountered. Inspector Foster
will accompany an experienced Fire Inspector for several weeks in order to
better learn the many details.

as carried out by the Fire Inspectors, we refer to the National Fire Protection
IlAnnual Conteat Entry Album" as submitted to the National Fire Protection
Association. Results, of our entry, will be forthcoming in the near
future.
