Annual Report - 2001 SALINA PUBLIC LIBRARY 301 West Elm Salina, Kansas 67401 Telephone: 785.825.4624 Fax: 785.823.0706 http://www.salpublib.org ANNUAL REPORT - 2001 The Library continued to follow the roadmap of the Strategic Plan in the year 2001. There were many successes during the year, but the most significant was the MPLA Youth Services Award. This was the fIrst year for the award, and despite fierce competition, we were cited for excellence in service to Youth in the 12 state Mountian Plains Library region. The NovelKansas program with Jim & Kate Lehrer was also a notable event. In other actions, the Board approved the purchase and installation of two Self-Check Circulation units. These are scheduled for a spring 2002 start up. The library added a second hardware technician to assist with computer maintenance. Here is a list of some of the actions and activities during the 2001 year: . Development of a computer training lab . Start of a new format for circulation: DVD films . Start of the Teen Advisory Board, which meets monthly . Re-designed new space for teens, with furniture and black lights . First Teen Summer Reading program . A successful end of Summer Reading Program Party with over 700 in attendance . Installation of new north lawn library sign, with updated logo . Conducted LapSit programs for parents and babies in the Born to Read program . Translated more library informational handouts into Spanish . Changed the name of Children's to Youth Services . Circulated around 450,000 items to the public . Scheduled an average of over 40 computer classes each month. . Distribution of the new Kansas Library Card for computer access to databases . Collaborated on Genealogy workshops, Spring Poetry Series, Storytelling Stage at the Smoky Hill River Festival, TALK Series, Success by Six Grant and more . Added over 17,000 items to Library collection of over 230,000 Use of the library is strong. There are around 20,000 visitors each month. Inten1et computers are in demand. Programs for Youth are plentiful and registration is usually full. Plans for 2002 include the Self-Check Circulation units, a software upgrade, more Spanish language materials, growth of a DVD collection, changes to the popular library web page, a new electronic 11blication and other uses of e-mail to contact library patrons. Joe McKenzie Library Director STRATEGIC PLAN Progress Report - 2001 Here is a list of some of the activities that were implemented during the past year to help us meet our mission and achieve our Strategic Plan. Service Response: Lifelon2 Learnin2 & Information Goall. Parents of infants and toddlers will be informed about the importance of reading to children early and often to improve their chances for successful educational experiences and to begin a pattern of lifelong learning. . Began monthly Lapsit programs for parents and their infants/toddlers. . Posted over 70 photos of Born to Read babies on web page. . Mailed 150+ quarterly informational postcards to parents. . Youth Services Librarian sits on Success by Six Board and Family Literacy Council . Recipient of Success by Six grant funds with other agencies. . Created highly visible Born to Read wall with photos, brochures and montWy drawings. Goal 2. Young adults will feel welcome and encouraged to develop or continue a pattern of lifelong learning through interaction with proactive staff and through access to resources and services that meet their informational needs. . Patrons will have increased access to resources to make informed decisions - and to support lifelong learning in all areas that affect the quality of their lives. . Promoted and Distributed Kansas Library Cards, which provide remote computer access to many informational databases. . Increased staff at the Reference desk to assist patrons . Developed and continued an e-mail Reference Service Service Response: Information Literacv Goall. Patrons will have opportunities to develop technological competence as well as access to resources that meet their needs for information literacy. . Tech classes for all ages, including teens and the new Toddler Tech Time, with informational handouts, as needed . Development and use of mobile computer lab, with projector . Questions on tech classes on fall survey of library users Service Response: Currents Topics and Titles Goall. Patrons will have increased access and expanded options in a variety of formats for high-demand, high-interest resources. . Compiled list and made fIrst order for DVD format for films, with a plan to begin circulation in spring 2002. . Increased copies of video and audio CD's . Reduced and eliminated purchase of abridged books on tape, while expanding the standing orders for unabridged cassettes and Books on CD . Increased spending of materials budget. STRATEGIC PLAN PROGRESS REPORT - 2001 Service Response: Multi-Cultural Awareness and Herita2e Goall. Patrons will be provided with increased non-English languag,e resources and materials to meet their information, learning and entertainment needs. . Analyzed usage of Spanish language materials to determine needs . Continued to purchase materials in Spanish. . Translated Youth Services registration card, adult Library Card info and library brochure into Spanish. . Staff :from Youth Services conducted program with Heartland Health Families for Spanish speaking parents on library services available. . Relabeled Spanish language videos for easier identification . Purchased additional materials in Spanish language with Success by Six Grant. Goal 2. Patrons will have opportunities to increase awareness and understanding of other cultures and local heritage. . Friends of the Library Talk series on Hispanic-American authors . Digitization of historical photos and documents . KITE display on Hispanic Kansans . Display on local history - "The Way we Were" . Storyteller Antonio Sacre . Storyteller DC Cornish appeared at Ethnic Festival SALINA PUBLIC LIBRARY VISION STATEMENT Our vision is for library service in Salina to improve on current strengths: support, use, facility, customer service, programming for children and families and materials collections. By the Year 2004, the Salina Public Library will also be viewed as: . A valuable and accessible information and entertainment resource . A center for technological literacy . An organization that serves a diverse population . A highly visible and collaborative community asset. lVIISSION STATEMENT The Salina Public Library provides for the diverse needs of the community with staff, resources, and services for lifelong learning, information and technological literacy, entertainment and cultural awareness.
