SALINA PUBLIC LIBRARY
ANNUAL REPORT - 2000
The focus for the year 2000 for the Salina Public Library was technology. The Library
migrated to a new generation of library automation systems with the Sirsi Unicorn
system. This project was planned and implemented over an 18 -24 month process.
Following the direction of the Strategic Plan 2000-2004 to become a technology
resource center, the Library re-developed a Web Page that includes Internet access to
the Library Catalog. It also includes e-mail reference service. With the same goal in
mind, the Library expanded staff to include a position for a tech trainer, who greatly
increased the number and variety of computer classes that the Library could offer. All of
this made technology, the focus for the year.
In reviewing other activities that worked toward goals in the Strategic Plan, the Library
had done the following, and more:
. Constructed a small staff parking lot to increase parking for patrons
. Increased Spanish Language materials and signage
. Started a Born to Read program to reach parents of infants and toddlers
. Conducted a Teen leadership workshop for Teen Volunteers
. Developed plans for a Young Adult Advisory Committee
. Implemented a Books on CD collection
. Moved Children's videos to Children's Library
. Created a new Library logo
. Increased the materials budget for popular materials
. Collaborated on Genealogy workshops
. Presented programming for over 15,000 children and families
. Offered a variety of technology classes to the public
. Circulated nearly 500,000 items to the public
Use of the Library continued to be strong, as measured by not only the circulation of
books and audio-visuals, but the number of visitors who use the library for meeting
rooms, programs, children's activities, computer classes, study and research sessions,
reading and Internet use. The Strategic Plan has been a clear map for the development
of services and should continue to provide direction for the next few years.
