Public Library 1989 ANNUAL REPORT 1989 ANNUAL LIBRARY REPORT In so many ways, the year 1989 was a change, of growth and development and a period activity in and around the library. It beginnings for the Salina Public Library. With the retirement of Dick Neuman, who served as Library Director for 27 years, Joe McKenzie was named to replace him and began his duties on March 1. The staff was reorganized. Nancy Reese became the Collection Management Librarian and Berniece Kearns was appointed to the Community Services Librarian position. A new position was added in the Children's Department and Carla Welsh, Head of Reference, began the search for a reference librarian. The Children's Department began what would be their most successful summer program ever, Where the Rainbow Ends. Irene Aga Head of Children's Services and her staff visited every classroom in the city to sign up children for the Summer Reading program and the kids responded. Over 6,000 enrolled in the program and enjoyed the numerous contests and programs associated with the theme. On July 10th, Diane Adcock was selected as the new reference librarian. According to plan, the'library achieved the following objectives during 1989: time of phenomenal marked by intense was a time of new Implementation of computerized book ordering methods. Reorganization of staff duties. Improvement of telecommunications with the installation of a new phone system. A major increase in the popular audio and video programs. The replacement of the front doors with automatic sliding doors. Plans to update the periodical collection. Installation of a Bookdrop in South Salina. In addition to the bookdrop at Dillion's Southgate, the library reached out into the community with deposit book collections at the Salina Art Center and the Kansas College of Technology. And, Berniece Kearns organized a Food for Fines program that was enormously successful as the public donated over 2,000 items of food in lieu of overdue fines. Real progress was made with the initiation of a book weeding project under the direction of Nancy Reese. . At the same time, the Board of Trustees gave approval for a sa~e of books by the Friends of the Library. Helen Heath, Friends President b ~gan the organization of books in the fall. As they busy year drew to a close, continued change and development seemed to occupy the staff and Board of Trustees. The Board selected Waddell and Reed to man~ge the library's investment funds. And, through the work of Administrative Assistant, Cindy Smull and Kennedy and Coe's accounting office, plans for electronic transfer of library payroll and the use of a check signing machine were approved by the Board. Things were changing, growing and developing at Public Library during 1989. With this growth came response from the public and staff as a new era at Public Library began.
