06-28-2001 Minutes -672- The Salina Public Library Board of Trustees held their monthly meeting Thursday, June 28, 2001 at 4:00 p.m. in the Prescott Room. The following Board members were present: Kristen Seaton, Cheryl Mason, Nancy Chandler, and Lynne Ryan. Others present were Cynthia Smull and Joe McKenzie. Lynne Ryan called the meeting to order at 4: 15 p.m. She asked if there were any additions or corrections. Since there are no changes the minutes stand as printed. PUBLIC COMMENTS: None STAFF INTRODUCTIONS: None FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY: The Friends were out in force at the "Great Race" on the 22nd of June. They gave out approximately 750 Salina Public Library balloons. They meet again in August. ORIENTATION: Staffing Chart: Joe passed out a staff chart for the Board members. The chart shows the relationship of each department in the chain of command at the Library as well as staff names and length of service. DISCUSSION ITEMS: 2002 Budget: The Board discussed the 2002 budget after Joe presented the written budget material. The Board discussed the "self-check" system the library is considering for installation. DISCUSSION ITEMS: Cafeteria Plan: Joe presented information on the cafeteria plan from the Family Health America organization. They would do all the cafeteria plan paperwork for $4.00 per person per year. DISCUSSION ITEMS: Internet Use: The Board went over the draft of the Internet Use Policy and discussed it. Questions answered included that the library has wireless Internet service at present. In addition, the "Internet Policy Use" would appear on the screen of the library computer before it connected the patron up to the Internet. The patron would have to check off with an "I accept" the agreement before they used our Internet service each time. DISCUSSION ITEMS: CIP A Compliance/E-Rate Funding: The reason this issue appears on this months agenda is that it is required to appear before the governing body in some form before July 1,2001, to keep the option open to apply for the E-rate funding. We did not apply for this grant last year, but want to leave the option open to do so in the future. ACTION ITEM: Re-classification of positions: The Board did not have any discussion on this item. Hold for July meeting. -- -673- The Board asked for the status on Cheryl Wing. Joe said that Cheryl came in with a written request for an extension of her leave of absence through August 1, 200l. She is hoping to be back to work by that time. ACTION ITEM: Policy Reading: Internet Policy: The Board discussed the proposed Internet Policy. : No action was taken. This will be held over to the July meeting. FINANCIAL REPORT: The Board looked at the checks payable list. Th.~ library purchases a large portion of their books from Baker and Taylor. The library has to pay Jim and Kate Lehrer's travel expenses. The library was originally inform led by Mr. Lehrer's office that we would not have to pay travel expenses since he would be traveling by private jet. STATISTICAL REPORT: May is usually a slow circulation month. Tech services processed 1785 items during May. The PC's in the copy room are used rel~ularly. LIBRARIAN'S REPORT: The third meeting of the Young Adult Advisory Board will be held tonight. We have strong interest in the young adult programs. Suggestions for furniture are to purchase the inflatable kind, and maybe have black lights. The library sign will be started Friday. An electrical surge caused Iby Western Resources burned out 72 ballasts in the building. We are working on replacing them. BOARD COMMENTS: Lynne Ryan asked if we are working with the new collection service yet. Joe explained that SIRSI wanted $2000.00 to write an interfalce program between our software and theirs just to do a trial, so we decided not to do this right now. Weare still using the current collection agency to collect long over due material and fines. Board members who will not be attending the July 26th meeting are Lynm: Ryan and Cheryl Mason.
