FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY REPORT: The Friends have about $17,000.00 in their
account. The Friends Favorites will be mailed next week. November 4th and 5th the
Friends will hold a booksale in the Prescott Room. The bookmark contest is coming
up next month.
DISCUSSION ITEMS: Automation System: The system is generally running pretty
good. It has been down twice since we started running. We have had a good public
response to the new system. We are looking at adding alternatives to the mouse with a
trackball for users who have difficulty with a mouse.
Janice Ostrom commented that the monitors are too high for short people or
people with bifocals to read easily. She suggested that the PC be moved and the
monitor be placed on table level.
An experimental run of overdues on the new system was done yest(~rday. We
are using the overdue mailer option as we have done in the past. Next Wednesday the
normal run of SIRSI system overdues will go out to patrons. We will star1t charging
fines again in early November. Cheryl is still doing classes. She developed and put
out a handout for patrons on how to do holds (reserves) for library materials.
On the circulation stats the number of holds (reserves) placed from patron's
homes via computer are not listed.
This winter, Nick will receive training on SIRSI Hyperion digitization software.
The new Salina Public Library Web Page has been running for a week. It will
be updated at a minimum of every two weeks.
The Native Daughters donated $500.00 for Kansas history. Judy Lilly is
getting a new book cart.
Check out the Reference Department's E-mail site on our new web page. We
will promote it later in the Fall.

LIBRARIAN'S REPORT: Kristi Hansen is working on the Born to Read Project.
The first flyer will go out through Heartland Healthy Family Organization. We will
need to do follow-ups. Kristi attended a meeting at the United Way about grants for
the Success By Six program.
I received a call from Lána Jordan. She wants to visit about the 25th
anniversary of the Smoky Hill River Festival.
The program with Salina Regional Health Center to put library sf~rvices at the
Central Mall fell through. We had SIRSI change our catalog system to rt~flect that
change.
There has been some discussion about hosting a literary electronic journal on
web page. KWU and the Arts Center are interested in collaborating on this project.
CKLS workshops for Trustees are finished. We could however contact Jim
Swan about having a workshop here if there is the interest to do so.
Jim Swan has indicated he is open to reimbursing the Salina Public Library for
ILL postage fees.
Joe put a proposal before the Board to consider the purchase of shirts with the
new library logo for the entire staff. The cost would be approximately $800-$1400
depending on the shirt selected.
The Board discussed the purchase of new shirts for the library staff.
00-52 On a motion made by Nancy Chandler and seconded by Janice Ostrom it was
RESOLVED THAT: The Board of Trustees of the Salina Public Library approves the
purchase of shirts with the new library logo for the library staff.
Motion carried. P 652. 10/19/00
FINANCIAL REPORT and STATISTICAL REPORT: The next three months
expenses are projected to be approximately $350,000.00. We should be able to put the
maximum of 10% of appropriations in the Capital Improvement Fund this year.
Children's is working on book and material selections at present and will be spending
down their budget.
The tax evaluation came in higher than predicted so the county clerk lowered
our mill levy slightly to meet our submitted budget. Joe gave the Board a report he
put together from the new system stats.
Susan Riordan who has worked part-time in the Children's Department for 10
years has turned in her resignation. She is working on her Master's degrc~e.
At present, a temporary employee is filling in while Lee Gallion is recovering
