The Salina Public Library Board of Trustees held their monthly meeting
Thursday September 28, 2000 at 4:00 p.m. in the Prescott Room. The following
Board members were present Jack Howard, Sheldon Lilak, Nancy Chandler, Janice
Ostrom, Lynne Ryan, Betsy Scholten and Alan E. Jilka who arrived late. Others
attending the meeting were Kristi Hansen, Lynnette Schoshke, William Boatman,
Joe McKenzie, and Cynthia Smull.
Betsy Scholten called the meeting to order. Betsy asked for changes in the
August Minutes.
00-47 On a motion made by Jack Howard and seconded by Lynne Ryan and Nancy
Chandler it was RESOLVED THAT: The Board of Trustees of the Salina Public
Library approves the minutes of the August meeting as printed. Motion passed.

PUBLIC COMMENTS: None
ST AFF INTRODUCTIONS: Joe McKenzie introduced three of the staff to the
Board. William Boatman who recently graduated from the University of Iowa
works in the Reference Department. Kristi Hansen is now our Youth Services
Coordinator and Head of the Children's Department. Lynnette Schoshke is the
Children's Department Program Specialist. She replaced Mary Weiland.
FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY: The Friends Favorite newsletter will be mailed out
in October or November. New to the Friends Board are Peggy Cooper, Hilma
Demaree, and Niki Mitchell. Nancy Geist is the President of the Friends of the
Library this year.
DISCUSSION ITEMS: Water Department request: We don't know where the
Water Department is on placement of their bill collection drop box at present.
Automation System: We are getting closer to having all the information transferred
into the new system. The catalog is almost ready. It needs a little fine-tuning. The
system will not take a negative number. It creates a problem when refunding
patron money. The refund issue will be addressed on the next software update to
the system. The library will need to be closed until one p.m. on October 10,11, &
12th for the change over of the system from Galaxy to SIRSI Unicorn.
The Board discussed the installation problems with the SIRSI System.
ACTION ITEM: Library Closings. The Board discussed the times the library
needed to be closed for Asist Day as well as for the system change over.
00-48 On a motion made by Nancy Chandler and seconded by Jack Howard it was
RESOLVED THAT: The Board of Trustees of the Salina Public Library approves
closing the library all day on October 9th (Columbus Day) for Asist Day in-service
training. The Board of Trustees of the Salina Public Library approves closing the
library until 1:00 p.m. on October 10, 11, and 12th for the system change over.

00-49 On motion made by Nancy Chandler and seconded by Jack Howard it was
RESOLVED THAT: The Board of Trustees of the Salina Public Library approves
an amendment to resolution 00-48 in light of the fact that since the library will be
closed on Columbus Day October 9th that the Library be open on November 11 th
Veteran's Day this year. Motion passed. P 650. 9/28/00.
FINANCIAL REPORT: We are at present within $52,000 of the tax appropriations
for the year 2000 budget, for the General Fund. The Board discussed tht~ financial
report.
STATISTICAL REPORT: August 2000 stats are a little better than last August.
LIBRARIAN'S REPORT: Dianna Waite has lined up Jim and Kate Lehrer to
speak on April 28 and 29th 2001. They are only charging us for expenses. The place
where the program will be held is yet to be determined.
CNA Insurance rates are up about 12 Yz% for next year. Cheryl Wing has
about two computer classes a day. We are doing some OPAC training now. Betsy
Scholten suggested that she would like to see some OP AC training for the Board.
We polled story time parents about having a picture day with mixed results.
We have scheduled that event. We have a digital camera to take photos and put on
our new web site. Nick Berezovsky is putting the finishing touches on the Web site.
Joe is going to Omaha for the Mountain Plains Regional Library Conference
in October. Joe is the incoming chair of the Public Library Section. Do we want to
reschedule the October meeting from the 26th to the 19th?
The Board decided to have the next three months Board meetings on the
following dates: October 19th, November 16th and December 21 st. The meetings will
be held in the Prescott Room at 4:00 p.m.
BOARD COMMENTS: Janice Ostrom received information on two Library
Workshops presented by the CKLS. Would a Board member be interestf:d in
attending? She has a list of the information she received from Chris Rippel at the
CKLS.

RESOLVED THAT: The Board of Trustees of the Salina Public Library .adjourns
