The Salina Public Library Board of Trustees held their monthly meeting
Thursday February 25,1999, at 4:00 P.M., in the Prescott Room.
The following Board members were present: Peter Brungardt, Jack Howard,
Joe Lock, Nancy Chandler, Janice Ostrom, Jim Sullivan, Betsy Scholten al1ld Tom
Arpke. Others present were Joe McKenzie, Roberta Ring, Amber Dennett and
James Talley.
Nancy Chandler called the meeting to order. She asked for any changes to
the January 1999 Board minutes. The Board minutes were approved as written with
no changes.
PUBLIC COMMENTS: None
STAFF INTRODUCTIONS: Joe McKenzie introduced Amber Dennett,
Marketing/PR Coordinator and Roberta Ring, Office Assistant.
FRIENDS OF THE LmRARY: James Talley was present to represent the Friends
of the Library. Joe McKenzie reported that the Friends are finishing the Friends
Favorites and it will be ready to go in March.
DISCUSSION: MarketinglPR: Amber Dennett talked about what marketing and
PR projects she is working on to promote the Library. She talked about the
Expresso Yourself program for teens, the library website, public announœments,
billboards, an upcoming brochure of the Library and postcards. Amber passed
around a draft of the overall marketing and promotions plan for the futun~.
PLANNING COMMITTEE UPDATE: Joe went over the results of the survey sent
to the public and staff. The Planning Committee has selected 4 areas in which to
focus service. From these four areas they will be writing goals and developing them.
LmRARY LEGISLATION: The Kansas Library Association's main push for 1999
is to increase state aid to libraries.
LIBRARIAN'S EVALUATION: Nancy Chandler appointed Joe Lock andl Tom
Arpke to tabulate the Librarian's Evaluation forms. The evaluations are h) be
mailed to Tom Arpke.
FINANCIAL/STATISTICS REPORT: Joe McKenzie reported that the Capital
accounts are building up. The mutual funds are moving up.
The Board discussed the January 1999 stats. It was noted that stats were
down and specifically Storyline calls. Joe explained that the equipment for the
Story line is old and breaks down frequently. Eight track tapes are still being used.
The equipment needs to be updated.

LmRARlAN'S REPORT: Betty Benson, Children's Department, had a suggestion
for a promotion she saw on returning overdue Library books. For the first week in
March overdue items can be returned fine free.
Joe talked about replacing the brass handrail. Joe showed the Board a
sample of a stainless steel handrail. The company has offered to swap the brass for
the stainless steel. The Board would like to know what the cost would be to install a
wood railing.
The Sandzen painting will be ready next week.
The Library will be a co-sponsor for the Poetry Series. The Poetry Series
will be at the Daily Grind. Also, the Library will sponsor the Storyteller's Stage at
the River Festival.
There is a staff opening in Reference for a rover.
BOARD COMMENTS: Joe Lock has been asked by different persons if the
Library has or will be getting books on CD's.

RESOLVED THAT: The February 25,1999, Board meeting be adjourned. Motion
