01-28-1999 Minutes -594- The Salina Public Library Board of Trustees held their monthly mfeting Thursday January 28, 1999, at 4:00 p.m., in the Prescott Room. The following Board members were present: Nancy Chandler, Janice Ostrom, Jim Sullivan, Betsy Scholten, and Tom Arpke. Others present were Joe McKenzie, Cynthia Smull, Lisa Bowman, Anna Schuetz, Mary Weiland, Judy Lilly and Marilyn O'Connor. Nancy Chandler called the meeting to order. She asked for any changes to the December 1998 Board minutes. The Board minutes were approved as written with no changes. PUBLIC COMMENTS: None ST AFF INTRODUCTIONS: Joe McKenzie introduced, Lisa Bowman, Head of Children's; Anna Schuetz the new part-time clerk in Children's; Mary Weiland, Children's new Program Specialist and Judy Lilly the Kansas Librarian. FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY REPORT: Marilyn O'Connor reported that the "Friends Favorites" newsletter has gone to the printer. Revenue is up because the I~riends Membership fees have increased. The Friends have more volunteers for book selection and delivery for the Homebound Program than there are Homebound patrons at present. DISCUSSION: Kansas Department Update: Judy Lilly presented a report about patron use of the Campbell Room, as well as types of materials available in the Kansas Collection. 1998 WRAP-UP: Joe McKenzie reported on the annual stats printed on the bookmark stats for 1998. Mary Weiland will free up Lisa Bowman for collection development in Children's. The second rover in reference has been hired. 1999 PREVIEW: The Library will be doing more public relations in 1999. We are considering moving the Children's videos to the Children's department. It will help the noise level in the Adult Library and provide more selection for children in the Children's department. We are looking at changing the display on the grand stairwell wall this year. We are having more Internet classes and will be adding more Internet computers this year. We will complete strategic planning for the updating of the Library computer system. Nicholas Berezovsky is compiling information for the new system. PLANNING COMMITTEE: The committee met on January 25, 1999. About twenty people attended the meeting. The meeting was very successful. The service response for planning cycle 2000-2004 was: 1. Lifelong Learning & Information 2. Information Literacy 3. Current Topics & Titles 4. Multi-cultural awareness & Heritage. We sent out 1,000 Planning Surveys and received 10% back the first week. This is considered to be a good response. -595- ACTION ITEM: Grand stairway handrail: The handrail is being refinishfd again. Mark from Gillam Architects will look at it and make a determination if it is satisfactory. 99-01 On motion made by Janice Ostrom and seconded by Jim Sullivan it was RESOLVED THAT: The Board approves on second reading the Health and Dental Insurance Policy. Motion passed. P 595, 1-28-99. FINANCIAL/STATISTICAL REPORT: Joe McKenzie presented the 1998: year end financial report. The Board discussed the 1998 stats. They liked the bookmark that shows the different 1998 Library statistics. LIBRARIAN'S REPORT: Joe reported that the Poetry Series is looking for a new space to hold the meeting. They are looking at the Daily Grind Restaurant and the Salina Arts Center. I will be attending a meeting with USD 305 who will be applying for a Federal Grant to create a Community Learning Center. The grant would provide the start up costs for the first three years. Salina Regional Health Center is studying opening up a storefront at the Central Mall and has approached the Library about circulating materials. We have signed a contract to purchase natural gas from Mountain Energy along with the City of Salina. It will save about 20% on the gas prices. We will have a booth at the Home Show in February. Karen Lewis our new Reference Librarian will start work sometimt~ the second week of February. 99-02 On motion made by Jim Sullivan and seconded by Tom Arpke it was RESOLVED THAT: The January 28,1999, Board meeting be adjourned. Motion passed. P 595,1-28- 99. On a final note: The Sandzen painting repair will be finished soon. Protective framing will probably be done. Some kind of see-through cover around the painting.
