05-28-1998 Minutes -562- The Salina Public Library Board of Trustees held their monthly meeting Thursday, May 28, 1998, at 4:00 p.m.,in the Prescott Room. The following Board members were present: Peter Brungardt, Jack Howard, Joe Lock, Nancy Chandler, Katherine Allison, Jim Sullivan, Betsy Scholten, and Tom Arpke. Others present were Joe McKenziE~, Lisa Bowman, and Cynthia Smull. Nancy Chandler called the meeting to order at 4:00 p.m. Nancy asked for corrections or additions to the minutes for April. 98-11 On motion made by Jack Howard and seconded by Tom Arpke it was RESOLVED THAT: The minutes of the April 1998 meeting be approved. Motion passed. 5-28-98, p. 562. PUBLIC COMMENTS: None STAFF INTRODUCTIONS: Joe introduced Lisa Bowman, Head of the Children's Department to the Board. Lisa will give a presentation on the Summer Reading Program later. FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY: Joe did not attend the Friends meE~ting. Friends did vote on new officers. The SUMMER READING PROGRAM: Lisa Bowman presented the brochure for the Summer Reading Program. Children's is expecting about 2,000 to enroll for the program. Additional part-time staff have been added, for the summer, to handle the increased work load. The end of SUI~mer party will be held on July 31, 1998. Teen Time is a new program this summer for children over the age of twelve. CURB CUTS: Information concerning the curb cuts the city would like the library to install was presented to the Board. The Mayor, Peter Brungardt, explained that the curb cuts were recommended by the ADA Accessibility Board. 98-12 On motion made by Jack Howard and seconded by Jim Sullivan it was RESOLVED THAT: The Library go ahead with the curb cuts as described in the printed material. Motion passed. Pg 562, 5-28-98. CURB CUTS AROUND THE LIBRARY Cost: $450.00 each times 5 = $2,250.00 Purpose: To increase accessibility around the Library/Ci1:y-County building for the disabled. Locations:Four of the cuts are on the west side. Two are at the top of the bookdrop driveway and two are at the bottom of the drive. The fifth curb cut or ramp would be at the northeast side of our parking lot at the bottom of the sloped sidewalk from the north entrance. -- -563- PRESCOTT MEMORIAL FUND INVESTMENT: Board treasurer, Tom Arpke, presented his research on options to invest the Prescott Memorial Fund. Nancy Chandler appointed Jack Howard and Tom Arpke to make recommendations to the Board about specific stocks/funds in which to invest. They will present their selections next month. FINANCIAL/STATISTICAL REPORT: The lights and heat line item will be lower in next year's budget. Lighting, heating and cooling the newly renovated lower level cost less than originally estimated. The April stats for Children's during 1997 and 1998 are close. Children's Department continues to be busy. The LIBRARIAN'S REPORT: Joe's reported that the loan of 150 books to the Happy Corner School be open a couple of mornings a week to check summer. Other events coming up are: The Smoky River Festival storyteller's Stage, sponsored in part by the Library, will be open the first time June 12. The Great American Race pit stop will be in Salina on June 6. The library and the Friends are helping to decorate the street for the event. The library will have Programs for Adults this fall in a 4 session series. The League of Women Voters will have issues programs. Discussion on changing the day and hour of the Board Meeting was discussed. It was determined to leave it the way it is for now. Carla Welsh, the Head of Reference, will be leaving the staff this fall. Her last day will be approximately October 1. Joe served on the Sheriff's Budget Committee. The county commissioners have hired a consultant to evaluate the Sheriff's Budget. The Library Shirts are in and the staff are planning to wear them to kick off the Summer Reading Program on June 1. Joe presented a proposal to the Board for a Library Planning Process to help determine the Library's future. 98-13 On motion made by Joe Lock and seconded by Tom Arpke it was RESOLVED THAT: The Board begin the "Library Planning Process" for 3-5 years. Motion passed. p. 563, 5-28-98. Library has made a bulk for the summer. They will books out during the Budget information was discussed. Peter Brungardt recommended that the library not raise its mill levy this year because of a 10% rise in the assessed evaluation of property in Saline County. Joe Lock asked where the new CD collection was located. The location of the new CD collection is near the videos in the AV area. 98-14 On motion made by Joe Lock and seconded by Jack Howard it was RESOLVED THAT: Since there is no further business to come before the Board, the meeting be adjourned.
