The Salina Public Library Board of Trustees held their monthly
meeting Thursday, August 14, 1997, at 4:03 p.m. in the Prescott
Room.
The following Board members were present: Kristin Seaton, Jack
Howard, Joe Lock, Nancy Chandler, Jim Sullivan, Janet Wilbur and
Tom Arpke. Others presents were: Joe McKenzie, Cynthia Smull, and
Carla Prickett.
Janet wilbur called the meeting to order. Janet asked Carla
Prickett to give her presentation.
PRESENTATION: Carla Prickett presented a water color by Charles
Davis to be hung in the Children's department.
97-22 On motion made by Nancy Chandler and seconded by Joe Lock
it was RESOLVED THAT: The Board approves the July minutes as
printed. Motion passed. p. 539, 8-14-97.

STAFF INTRODUCTIONS:
None
DISCUSSION: Joe McKenzie described the different types of
advertising that the Library was doing for a new Children's
Librarian. The deadline for receiving applications for the
position will be in mid-September.
The silent study rooms are almost complete. Joe will be using
one for office space while his office space is remodeled. When the
remodeling is complete one of the silent rooms will be used as a
silent study room and one will be used for a group study room. The
group room can be reserved for two hours at a time.
Joe gave the Board a renovation update. Joe received another
complaint about the outside sidewalk around the Children's
department. Jack Gillam received an estimate of $7,000.00 to put
a railing around the area in question. They are still evaluating
the need for a fence.
Joe asked if the Board wanted to have Kennedy and Coe come and
talk about the 1997 audit. The Board does not think there is a
need to have the accountants come this year.
ACTION ITEMS:
97-23 On motion made by Jack Howard and seconded by Tom Arpke
it was RESOLVED THAT: The Board accepts the 1998 Budget as
published. (This includes the classification changes). Motion
passed. August 14, 1997, p. 539.
FINANCIAL/STATISTICAL REPORT: Joe commented that the KPL bill was
lower than expected. The stats for August are still strong and
Children's are on pace with August 1996.

LIBRARIAN'S REPORT: Midwest Security will give us an estimate on
securi ty cameras for the library. Securi ty for the building is
being discussed on an on-going basis.
BOARD COMMENTS: Tom Arpke and Joe Lock commented that if it is
possible, they would like to see the Library sponsor someone on
staff to take the Salina Chamber's Leadership Classes.
ADJOURNMENT: There being no further business to
Board, the meeting was adjourned by Janet Wilbur.
