The regular montp,¡y meeting o:t the Sal,-Ína Public Library
Board was at 4;00 p.m. Thursday, June 19, 1997, in the Prescott
Room.
The following Board members were present; Jack Howard, Joe
Lock, Nancy Chandler, and Roger Struble.
The minutes of the May meeting were approved without
changes.
PUBLIC COMMENTS; None
STAFF I~T~ODUCTIONS; None
COMMITTEE REPORTS: Joe McKenzie gave a presentation on the
proposed changes in the various step classifications. The Board
indicated after discussion that they would like to see a two step
"training wage" implemented on the pay classification scale.
Nancy Chandler, and Jack Howard, met with Joe McKenzie about
the 1998 budget earlier in the week. The debt to the city for
the renovation project next year will be $123,000. The budget
committee would like to see the mill levy remain the S8.me or
raised a quarter of a mill. The Budget Committee recou~ends a 3%
across the board increase in salary adjustment and that~ the
Library be able to transfer the maximum amount into the capital
improvement fund in 1998. Also check if the Building Fund can be
legally maintained after the construction is complete.
Roger Struble would like to investigate if the Library can
endow itself. Roger and Jack asked Joe McKenzie to check if the
Board could legally reimburse money back to the Prescot.t Memorial
Fund that was "borrowed" to help with the Renovation Expense.
RENOVATION UPDATE: The contractor is working on framingr in the
old Children's Department. The front doors are in and the
skylights are completed.
Jack Gillam and the Assistant City Manager noted t.hat the
Library has some liability with the slope down to the Children's
Department windows because there is no fence next to the sidewalk
around the area. The Board discussed this subject.
The Reference Department office has moved to allow
renovation of the quiet rooms to start.
The contractors renovation completion date is projected to
be the end of August.
The Board discussed change order #11. It adds $330 to pay
for a water drainage pan above the ceiling in the Kansas Room.
Jones-Gillam will pay this amount if it is not approved by the
Board. This change order will be held until the next Library
Board meeting.
The Brass railing in the Grand stairwell is tarnishing. The
company from which it was purchased is sending a representative
to examine the rail to see why it is tarnishing. The glass on
the rail is sliding. Glass services is looking for a way to
solve this problem.

Joe Lock asked if the fire alarm set off during the grand
opening of the Children's Department was placed too low on the
wall. Joe McKenzie said he would check it out.
FINANCIAL/STATISTICAL REPORT: The stats in the children's
department for this month are up over 50% for the first twelve
days of June. A big month is expected.
