The regular monthly meeting of the Salina Public Library
Board was held at 4:00 p.m. Thursday, May 23, 1996, in the
Campbell Room.
The following Board members were present: Evelyn Maxwell,
Mary Jarvis, Nancy Chandler, Roger Struble, Jim Sullivan, Janet
Wilbur, and Billie Winkler. Others present were: Art Pitcockl
Julie Linneman, Charlene Allen, Cynthia Smull, and Joe McKenzie.
14-96 On motion made by Roger Struble and seconded by Billie
Winkler it was RESOLVED THAT: The minutes of the April 1996
meeting are accepted as written. Motion passed. p.502, 5-23-96
PUBLIC COMMENTS: None
STAFF INTRODUCTIONS: Joe introduced Art Pitcock, the Library
Technology Coordinator,. Charlene Allen and Julie Linneman from
the Children's department.
Julie gave a presentation to the Board about the Summer
Reading Program in the Children's Department.
FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY:

CENTRAL KANSAS LIBRARY systems REPORT: None
DISCUSSION ITEMS: Updated renovation plans were submit.ted to the
Board by Jack Gillam. The specs are expected to be finished by
June 4th. An invitation to bid will be sent to contractors upon
the completion of specs. Bid opening date will be set for early
July.

Joe explained some financial issues relating to renovation.
Joe has specs available in his office for viewing by anyone
interested.
The Board received the annual Librarian's Evaluation Form to
be filled out and returned to Jim Sullivan with in the next 10
days.
Joe submitted a proposal for the continuation of t\~O
circulation desks when renovation is complete. It has been
discovered through lengthy investigation that it would cost more
in time and money, and be less effective for patrons, and staff
to change to one circulation desk. The consensus of thE~ Board
after some discussion was that the proposal was fine.

FINANCIAL/STATISTICAL REPORT: The new Library van has beE!J1
purchased.
LIBRARIAN'S REPORT: The Library has purchased a new Ford
windstar Van for Library use.
The Library will help sponsor the storyteller's "ETH-NOH-
TEC" (Robert Kikuchi-Yngojo and Nancy Wang) at the Smoky River
Festival Children's Stage. The storytellers will do a
Storytellers Workshop at the Library on June 6 from 2:00 - 5:00
P.M.
Joe commented on the Horizon Grant given to the Library for
$1000.00 for seed money toward the Storytellers Throne project.
Phillips Lighting has sent $2,890.00 for the project. Ot.her fund
raising for the project is slow now because other priorit.ies fill
the time. The plans for the throne may be seen in the
Librarian's office anytime.
15-96 On motion made by Janet Wilbur and seconded by Evelyn
Maxwell it was RESOLVED THAT: There being no further business to
come before the Board, the meeting is adjourned. Motion passed.
