SPECIAL MEETING OF THE BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
June 13,2017
4:00 p.m.
The Special Meeting of the Board of Commissioners was called to order at 4:00 p.m. in Room 107,
City-County Building. Roll call was taken followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of
N silence.
ZThose present and comprising a quorum: Mayor Kaye J. Crawford (presiding), Commissioners Jon
Blanchard,Trent Davis,and Melissa Rose Hodges.
Also present: Jason Gage, City Manager; Michael Schrage, Deputy City Manager; Greg Bengtson,
City Attorney; and Shandi Wicks,City Clerk.
Absent: Commissioner Karl Ryan.
ADMINISTRATION
(3.1) Kansas State University President Richard B. Meyers will address the
commissioners and the public to announce the global aeronautic initiative being
explored by the university and community.
Richard B. Meyers, Kansas State University President, announced the global aeronautic
initiative and provided additional information through a Power Point presentation
regarding the effort.
Mayor Crawford provided her thoughts on the effort.
Commissioner Davis asked if the full plan would be implemented in the beginning or
would the plan be implemented in pieces. Mr. Meyers stated the information needed to
determine that would come from the research which would help to develop the plan to
come up with the full outcome of the effort.
Mayor Crawford asked for a timeline of the effort. Mr. Meyers stated the implementation
would probably occur in October 2017.
Commissioner Hodges provided her thoughts on the effort and thanked Kansas State
University for their work on the effort.
Commissioner Blanchard thanked Kansas State University for attending and Kansas
Representative J.R. Claeys for supporting the effort. He continued by asking what the
outcomes would be from the effort. Kent Glasscock, President, Kansas State University
Institute of Commercialization stated the global private sector would be a big key in the
initiative and if the effort was fully implemented, the effort would increase the economic
impact to the community.
Daniel Baffa, 2424 Drake Place, asked what type of participation was needed from the
community. Mr. Meyer stated that once the market study was completed, the information
for the future needs of participation would be known.
Commissioner Davis asked if there were corporations that would buy-in during the early
stages of the initiative effort. Mr. Meyer stated the goal was to bring in corporations for a
buy-in on the effort as early as possible.
