Dear Mayor:
Over the past eighteen months, the Conference
of Mayors, in collaboration with the National
Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA),
has explored ways that cities can develop compre-
hensive alcohol abuse prevention approaches, par-
ticularly through policymaking. The enclosed is-
sue paper, Alcohol Abuse Prevention Strategies:
A Profile of One City -- San Francisco, provides
an in-depth presentation of the comprehensive al-
cohol abuse prevention program in San Francisco.
San Francisco, one of the cities which has done
extensive work in this area, addresses alcohol
abuse through model programs and policy approaches.
The city's multifaceted approach involves the crim-
inal justice system, the schools, and the civil ser-
vice system. This profile of San Francisco provides
detailed information on the various prevention stra-
tegies which that city has employed. It is pre-
sented to stimulate thought and discussion and to
provide examples for Mayors to consider in address-
ing alcohol abuse In their cities.
For Mayors interested in becoming involved in a
prevention effort in their communities, NIAAA is
sponsoring a 1982 Alcohol Abuse Prevention Campaign.
This campaign will combine a mass media strategy
with a local prevention strategy. In addition to
television and radio public service announcements,
local organizations will sponsor alcohol abuse pre-
vention activities. For further information and
guidance on local involvement please call (800)
227-3846 (in California call 415-398-2040) and ask
for the Alcohol Campaign Coordinator.
