KIDS AND DRUGS:
Valerie Paape
This program is designed to give parents general information about drugs
and their use, an opportunity to examine the skills needed for the
prevention of harmful drug involvement in the family, and an opportunity
to develop a prevention goal and a plan for achieving that goal. IIKids
and Drugs" is based on the same philosophy of child training as is
outlined in S.T.E.P. This program advocates letting children make
decisions and be responsible for the consequences, using effective
communication and exploring natural and logical consequences as an
approach to discipline. To get the most out of "Kids and Drugsll parents
need to commit time and effort to the program. They must be willing to
attend the sessions regularly, to do the readings and the exercises, and
to participate in the discussions and activities. The program is
designed to take place during seven different two hour sessions.
Availability: As this Resource Directory goes to press, the uKids and
Drugs" materials are not in final form. A limited number of draft leader
and participant guidebooks are available on a loan basis from SRS/AOAS.
Upon completion of field testing and final printing, the material will be
available from the Alcoholism Foundation of Manitoba, 201-1580 Dublin
Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada R3E Ol4. Phone: 204/775-8601.
