Dear Sirs:
Attached is a 'fact' sheet explaining the Love House concept and a
proposal for funds for the prevention and/or treatment for youth
living in Salina.
We are the 'new kid on the block' in Salina, formed in February 1986
to reach the 'high-risk' youth.
Children from five to twelve years old are generally excluded from
treatment programs, even though they face up to four times the risk of
becoming chemically dependent if from a chemically dependent family.
There are programs for the alcoholic, for the co-dependent, some for
adolescents, but virtually nothing of support for the pre-adolescent.
The problems that exist for these children need to be the concern for the
Bntire community.
We can provide these children with the tools they need to become healthy
teens and adults. Our major interest is in this age group although we do
some work with teens.
Funding is needed to provide services to those children who are unable
to participate due to lack of funds. These children are high-risk and need
a support system. Support systems can reduce the number of run-aways,
suicides, teen-age pregnancies, youth in the juvenile system, and youth
in need of in-patient treatment. Positive peer support is formed in the
groups, school work improves, attitudes and behaviors are changed, and
the self-image is improved. Prevention instead of correction is our
philosophy with this age group.
Since we are providing a new service you may have questions, please
feel free to call.
Thank you for giving our proposal your serious consideration.
Sincerely,
Arlene Deen

LOVE HOUSE is a non-profit corporation providing services
to children of alcoholics and others. Love House is licensed by
the State of Kansas for alcohol and drug abuse counseling
treatment, evaluation and referrals.
Our program is designed especially for the youth of today.
Although our services are not limited to children and youth of
chemically dependent homes, a large percent (80% plus) fall in
this category.
Statistics show that one out of ten individuals will need
treatment for drug or alcohol abuse. If the child is from a
chemically dependent home the risk factor of abusing drugs or
alcohol is FOUR times greater. Unhealthy patterns of learned
behavior make life painful. Individuals need support and
education to break these patterns. To deal with children when
concepts, attitudes and beliefs are forming can be the key to
primary prevention.
Love House uses the support group concept to provide a safe
confidential atmosphere for youth to share problems and build
positive peer support while learning to be responsible for their
own attitude and behaviors.
Love House objectives:
To assist in learning to identify and communicate :=eelings..
To build self-esteem and self-awareness...
To help youth learn to be responsible for their behavior

To assist in learning to find alternative ways of dealing

To provide structure and boundaries
To provide education about alcohol and drugs...
To provide education about chemical dependency as a
