The HOTLINE is the only telephone crisis intervention, suicide prevention,
community-wide information and referral service available to the citIzens of' Salina.
Salina citizens experiencing stress) feeling suicidal, or In need of an appropriate referral to
a human service can contact the HOTLINE 24 hours a day) 7 days a week and be assisted by a
HOTLINE-trained paraprofessional telephone counselor.
The HOTLINE is currently receiving approximately 300 cal1s montlìly, Of that
number an estimated 20% are directly related to the use or misuse of alcohol and/or drugs.
Of the cal1s that substance abuse is related) directly or In-directly) the cal1ers range In
ages from 12 to 83, male and female. In the 40 suIcide attempts the HOTLINE has
intervened in during the last 3 years) alcohol and/or drugs were involved In two-thirds of
the i nc i dences.
Many times the HOTLINE caner does not identify or is consciously aware that
alcohol and/or drugs is the catalyst or reason for the crisis or stress they are experiencing.
As the caner talks and expresses the stress) the use or misuse of a substance becomes
defined to them. Other times) HOTLINE callers are aware their stress is directly related to
alcohol or drugs) but are unaware of services in the community that they can aval]
themselves of. Due to the extensive training a HOTLINE telephone counselor r'eceives) they
are able to refer to the appropriate service for the individual caner,
The HOTLI NE has gained the confidence and has acquired credíbi I i ty in the
community; therefore) when a HOTLINE counselor provides a referral to an assestment
and/or treatment service) the caller is more apt to follow through with treatment and/or
rehabilitation, The caner becomes respective to and encouraged by a referral given by the
HOTLI NE,
The HOTLINE is non-discriminate when using referrals, The HOTLINE currently
