ORIENTATION: Morgan Davis, CLASS
Morgan mentioned that our program won the award for best catalog through the LERN
program this year. We have implemented new software for enrollment this year and it is
working well. Enrollment numbers are up. We have 75 courses for the Fall semester and
41 have met their minimum. 15 classes have no enrollment yet. We are handling kids
classes differently this semester and just putting them in the catalog along with the adult
classes by topic. Morgan answered questions from the board and also talked about new
catalog locations around town like McDonalds, Tammy Walker, banks and even USD 305
locations such as teacher lounges.
FINANCIAL REPORT: Light and heating bills seem to be slightly lower, not sure if it's
due to weather or our new lighting and cooling systems. Melanie had been working on a
E-rate Federal grant and has received a little over $12,000 per year towards our internet
costs thru 2017.-We will have to re apply in 2018.
STATISTICAL REPORT: July was a little less busy than June. We still had strong
meeting room use. Wireless internet use has almost doubled since last July.
LIBRARIAN'S REPORT:
We will be replacing the Air Conditioner that cools the Prescott Meeting Room. The Flag
Pole has been fixed and back in use now. The Library will have a float in the Santa Fe Day
Parade. Barbara Mulvihill applied for and received a grant for the Story Corp project so
work is starting on that. We will be adding a few more little libraries in parks around the
community and Lori is working on getting groups to "adopt" a little library to help check
on them periodically for maintenance and restocking. We are still in the process of getting
insurance quotes for our renewal in September. The Talk Salina program has asked the
library to designated someone to their Board.
BOARD COMMENTS: Jon Blanchard asked about the teamwork and eliminating silos
thinking going on with the staff. We have had a meeting with employees to explain the
project and let them know that they will be expected to help throughout the year with
library events and also the concept of stepping out of their silos and working with other
departments. Teams will also be created and staff assigned to work on those teams. The
idea being that we all work for the Library not just our individual departments. Mary
acknowledged that hiring Sam Neff as a shelver for Youth Services was a good hire. It's
good when we can hire sometimes from our Youth Volunteer pool. Karen Bonar
mentioned that the Salina Reads book"Station Eleven" is a very good read.
The Board of Trustees of the Salina Public Library adjourned at 8:12 a.m
