DEVELOPMENT BUSINESS
(7.1) Staff report on recommendation from the City Planning Commission
concerning Zoning Application 88-9, filed by the City Planning Commission for
amendment to Section 42-507 of the Salina Code. The Planning Commission
recommends limitations on the use of temporary signs including decorative
business signs, advertising signs for special events and mobile signs.
[Introduce an Ordinance for first reading on October 17, 19881
[Schedule a public comment period for October 17, 1988 meeting]
Roy Dudark, Director of Planning and Community Development,
discussed the content of Zoning Application 88-9. Mr. Dudark indicated several
questions had surfaced in the past regarding signage guidelines and that the
City of Salina currently has no restrictions on temporary signs.
Mr. Dudark responded to questions from the City Commission on the
recommendations before Mayor Soderberg asked for public comment.
Kenny Jorgensen, of Warta Buick, expressed his concerns over the
proposed restrictions. Mr. Jorgensen felt the restrictions would hamper
businessmen too much.
Jim Vanderbilt, 1100 North Tenth, expressed his opposition to the
proposed restrictions. Mr. Vanderbilt felt the restrictions would encourage
merchants to use less expensive signage materials resulting in more trash for the
community. Also, he expressed his concern that Salina businesses could not
afford to lose any more business.
The City Commission took no action.
