We have had no official calls or comments about the 2004 budget, though, like me, you may have heard informal comments that through the Journal article people are aware that out general fi~nd budget is being reduced. Preliminary circ figures for July are good - around 56,000. That's encouraging. The Summer Reading Program wrapped up Aug 1. No official evaluation as yet, but staff seem pleased that it went off without major problems. The party was a success. The volunteers were a big help. We will do some scheduling changes for the teens next year, so we don't have too many on one shift. We have had a computer switch go out and a firewall, technical and necessary. We had to replace them. Still, we also received a grant for $4,135 from Kan-Ed for equipment just like that. Melanie is still developing plans for a Digital Design Studio, which we may place near the south wall of the Tech Center. It will be a large workstation. Melanie is investigating grant opportunities. I have asked for an application from the State Library for a Library Services & Technology Act (LSTA) grant. We are discussing the timing of such applications. Staff are recommending a disclaimer statement be placed at the new Consumer Info Center. It would basically say that the medical info is general and is not a substitute for medical advice. They would also attach it to printouts from the Internet that they create with medical info for patrons. Discussion has centered around real need, or whether this would lead to a general disclaimer statement for all info. Some libraries use them, some are still operating on common sense and good will. Of course, you can be sued for anything. We are not really worried about that, but it is good advice to remind people they may need to see ~a physician. We also revived discussion at the Dept. Head level on how we are losing the cell phone war. It happens more and more. We will put up more signs and try to remind people if they are making noise when they talk. The Friends booksale is Aug, 9-10 - this weekend. The quilt/photo display is up until mid-August. I'll try to take some vacation days this month before :my anniversary date on Sept. 1.
