Describe Current
Situation
In 2005 a water playground was constructed in Jerry Ivey Park. This facility was
equipped with paper filtration. The paper filter requires a great deal of maintenance
in that they need to be clean every other day. Also the life span is less than one
season. If the filters do clog up it automatically turns the pumps off, resulting in the
public calling because the playground is not working. Cleaning the filter is a time
consuming task and the filters are fairly expensive.
Analyze
By changing to a sand filter system it would eliminate many man hours cleaning
filters and the need to replace paper filter every year. Backwashing a sand filter
would take 10 minutes compared to 1.5 hours to clean paper filters. The annual
cost of replacing paper filters is $600. We currently have a quote from Sunflower
Pool and Spa to install a sand filter system for $3,995.
Initial cost $3,995
Annual savings
(2) paper filters @ $300 $600
83.4 man hours @ $19.39 $1,617
Total annual savings $2,217
Return on investment:
Initial cost: $3,995
Annual savings: $2,217 = 1.8 years
Make Recommendation

Use bullet points to identify customer service or employee benefits:
• More efficient use of Park man hours
• Over time would reduce cost
• Better service to the public by not have the playground shut down because
of low water flow.
Implementation Plan
Contract Sunflower Pool and Spa to install sand filter system as soon as possible
