Concern/Problem
We have a specific cellphone that we have to use for transferring our 12leads to the
hospital, each ambulance is equipped with a city cell phone for communication. We
don’t make that much calls with it. So it’s not cost effective to have two cellphones
in the truck. The city’s sprint cell phone do not have good enough coverage when it’s
needed out in the county or where the sprint network is not covered. Our 12 lead
cellphone has the better coverage, and we don’t need the extra equipment in the
ambulance.

Describe Current
Situation
Each ambulance (there are six) uses a cell phone to transfer vital signs to the ER,
and to make outgoing calls and receive incoming calls. We currently pay $25 per
month, per line. In addition, we have 4 cell phones used by the command staff, also
at $25 per month/ per line. This makes a total of 10 cell phones at an annual cost
of $3000.
Analysis
• We don’t make enough calls to warrant a regular cell phone line ($25/month),
and have concluded that a “pay as go plan” will suffice.
• Pageplus offers a plan that costs $10 for 100 minutes, which is good for 120
days. This plan meets our needs
• By switching to this system we can save $$2700 annually.
Make Recommendation
• Recommend that the city review cell phone usage and where practical switch to
a “pay as you go” plan. This could have significant dollar savings.

Below screen shot shows that 10 dollars was added to this cellphone a month ago, and we have $7.81
dollars remaining. So $10 will last throughout the duration of its 120 days expiration period.
