Attached is an ordinance to change the City Code as it pertains to the Arts
Commission. These changes are recommended by the Arts Commission. The change
is in the name of the Arts Commission from Arts Commission to Arts and
Heritage Commission and a restatement of the purpose of the Commission. The
reason for the change is to reflect what the Commission is actually doing.
The original ordinance is about twelve years old and in that time the Arts
Commission has gone through a growth process and has expanded some activities
and programs while restricting or eliminating others. Also, the name change
may have some effect on the ability of the Arts Commission to attract grants
from both the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for
the Humanities. The conflict between these organizations sometimes makes it
difficult to obtain grants without the right "name".
