J AREA CODE 913 TA 7.0701 FIFTH AND ASM STREETS P. O. BOX 746 cSaChza,\azzat 67go7 April 15, 1968 M TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: On On March 25, 1968, the City Commission approved the use of plastic water piping under the following conditions: 1. The plastic piping used shall be either PVC -160# working pressure (Type 1) commercial standard CS -256-63, ASTM D -1784-60T; or Municipal Service Line (Type 3, Grade 3) high density, high molecu- lar weight, commercial standard CS -255-63 AST14 D -1784-63T. 2. Only iron pipe sizes shall be used. 3. Plastic pipe is not to be used under paving or from the water main to the water meter. 4. Plastic pipe is not to be used for interior resi- dential or commercial plumbing. 5. The installation is to be made in accordance with the Salina Plumbing Code and the manufacturer's specifications. The electrical system and the telephone system normally use the metallic water -piping .within the structure for grounding. Replacement of the metallic water service line with a non- metallic material may create a very serious shock hazard both to the workman and to the tenants of the structure. Removal of the grounding connections (which is unauthorized) may actually increase the hazard. In order to eliminate this hazard, we recommend the r.egrounding of the electrical system prior to the replacement of the water service. This office will require the issuance of an electrical permit for the regrounding of the electrical service and bonding to the water piping prior to the issuance of the plumbing permit.
