Ordinance No. 518
An ordinance providing for the construction of sidewalks.
Be it ordained by the Mayor and Councilmen of the City of Salina, Kansas.
Section 1. That the owner or owners of any real estate abutting on the west side of Phillips Street
from Iron Avenue south to University Place from Phillips Street to the west line of Lot No. 27 on said
University Place in the University Addition to the City of Salina, Kansas, are hereby required to build or
cause to build by the 1St day of December 1886 a sidewalk in front of each real estate in manner as
specified in Section 6 of this ordinance and to the satisfaction of the committee on sidewalks of said City.
Section 2. On the south side of Ash Street from Th and 81h Streets are hereby required to build or cause
to be built by the 1St day of December 1886 a sidewalk in front or along such real estate in a manner as
specification in Section 7 of this ordinance and to the satisfaction of the committee on sidewalks of said city.
Section 3. That the owner or owners of any real estate abutting on the south side of Iron Avenue
between Seventh and Fourth Streets are hereby required to build or cause to be built by the 1St day of
December 1886, a sidewalk in front of or along such real estate in manner as specified in Section 8 of this
ordinance and to the satisfaction of the committee on sidewalks of said city.
Section 4. That the owner or owners of any real estate abutting on the north side of Iron Avenue,
between Santa Fe Avenue and Fourth Street, are hereby required to build or cause to be built by the 1St
day of December 1886 a sidewalk in front of or along said real estate in manner as specified in Section 8 of
this ordinance, and to the satisfaction of the committee on sidewalks of said city.
Section 5. That the owner or owners of any real estate abutting on the east side of Santa Fe
Avenue and Fourth Street are on the west side of Santa Fe Avenue, between Iron Avenue and Walnut
Street are hereby required to build or cause to be built by the 1St day of December 1886 a sidewalk in front
of or along said real estate in manner as specified in Section 8 of this ordinance and to the satisfaction of
the committee on sidewalks in said city.
Section 6. That the sidewalks provided for in Section 1 of this ordinance shall be of even grade
throughout as now determined by the City Engineer and shall be six feet wide, of black concrete of
asphaltium or of a good quality of stone flagging or of good quality of pine plank two inches thick, spiked
with 20 penny nails and supported by three 2x6 inch stringers, wall lapped and specified with 20 penny
nails. The stingers shall be laid upon flat stones placed at intervals of not more than four feet.
Section 7. That sidewalks provided for in Section 2 of this ordinance shall be of even grade
throughout, as now determined by the City Engineer, or shall be built 8 feet wide, of black concrete
pavement or asphaltium or of a good quality of stone flagging or of a good quality of common pine plank
two inches thick spiked with 20 penny nails and supported with four 2x6 stringers well lapped and spiked 20
penny nails. The stringers shall be laid upon flat stones, placed at intervals of not more than four feet.
Section 8. That the sidewalks, provided for in Sections 3, 4, and 5 of this ordinance shall be of
even grade throughout as now determined by the City Engineers, and shall be built sixteen feet wide of
black concrete pavement or asphaltam, or of good quality of stone flagging or of a good quality of common
pine plank, two inches thick, spiked with 20 penny nails, and supported by eight 2x6 stringers, well lapped
and spiked with 20 penny nails. The stringers shall be laid upon flat stones placed at intervals of not more
than four feet.
Section 9. The committee on sidewalks, shall as soon as practicable after the 1 St day of December
1886 cause sidewalks to be constructed between the limits specified in Sections 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 and in
manner described in Sections 6, 7, and 8 of this ordinance in front of all lots and premises, whose owners
have failed to comply with the foregoing requirements and shall report their proceedings to the Mayor and
Council in writing which report shall be filed and preserved by the City Council.
Section 10. The expense of building such sidewalks by said committee shall be assessed against
the real estate abutting thereon and collected as other taxes on such real estate.
Section 11. This ordinance shall take effect and be in force from and after its publication in the
Saline County Journal.
