1752 Building FoundationsTPAy 71 1 1 1 1752. _ (Published inthe Salina Evening Journal March 213, 1914.) An ordinance amending sections two, three, four and six of Ord- ianance No. 1617, passed and approved July 17, 1911, and all other parts of said ordinance No. 1617 in conflict with this ordinance, and repeal- ing such sections two, three, four and six and other parts of such ordinance so amended. Be it ordained by the Mayor and Councilmen of the City of Salina: Section 1. That section two of Ordinance No 1617 be and the same is hereby amended to read as follows, viz: "Proper foundations of masonry shall be provided for the support of all buildings. No found- ations of any stone, brick or cement building erected within the fire limits of the city shall be less than three (3) feet below the exposed surface of the ground, and such foundation wall shall in all cases be at least four (4) inches wider than the wall to be built and laid im- mediately above or on top of it; Provided, that such foundation walls s shall in any event be not less than twelve (12) inches in thickness and of sufficient width so that the bearing pressure shall be no less than twenty-five (25) pounds to the square inch." Sec. 2. That section three (3) of Ordinance No. 1617 be and the same is hereby amended to read as follows: "The external walls of all brick buildings hereafter erected within the fire limits of said city shall be in thickness not less than the dimensions designated in the following table, viz: 2nd 3rd 4th Basement 1st Story Story Story story One story ............... 23 13 Two story ............... 27 13 13 Three story .............. 21. 17 13 13 Four story .............. 21 17 17 13 13 Provided, that stone walls, concrete walls not properly reinforecd with iron rods, and solid or hollow cement block walls, shall be at least four (40 Inches thicker than brick walls, both independent and party, in all similar cases. Concrete walls properly re-inforced, with loads uniformly distributed, shall be treated as to thickness, like brick walls. Provided, that partition walls of brick, stone or cement may be built of a thickness four (4). inches less than an outside wall of the same story; and provided further, that with speeialpermission of the fire chief, first obtained, front and rear walls may be built of a thickness four (4) inches less than outside walls; except that in no case, shall any wall be less that twelve (12) inches thick, sheds of iron clad construction shall not be built within the fire limits; pro- vided, however, that buildings used for storage may be built at the rear of business houses of the following construction; Height, 10 feet; width 12 feet; length 20 feet; to be built with sackett board or metal lath, and out, same to be plasteded inside and out with Portland cement, floor to be of earth or cement, or brick; roof to be of metal.". Sec. 3. That section four (4) of prdinance No. 1617 be and the same is hereby amended.to read as follows: "All buildings hereafter erected within the fire limits shall have substantial side f.ire walls, extending at least eighteen (18) inches in height for buildings of three stories and under, and thirty (30) inches in height for buildings or more than three stories, above where the roof connects with the walls, said fire walls to be in thickness not less than twelve (12) inches for brick, stone or cement, and to be coped with stone, cement, tile or cast iron.". Sec. 4. That section six (6) of Ordinance No. 1617 be and the same is hereby amended to read as follows: "The fire chief shall, when- ever in his judgment it is necessary for the public safety so to do, have full power to direct and require the placing of self-closing iron or fire -proof doors, with fusible links, at all openings in stone, brick or cement party or division walls within the fire limits; and such fire - doors shall be constructed and installed subject to his inspection and approval." Sec. 5. That sections two (2), three (3), four (4) and six (6) of Ordinance No. 1617, passed and approved July 17, 1911, and all parts of said ordinance in conflict with this ordinance be and the same are hereby repealed.
