The regular mouthly meeting of the Salina Public Library Board of Trustees was
held at 7:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 20, 2007,.in the Tech Center Meeting Room.
The following Board members were present: Jo Reed, Lynne Ryan, Sandie
Johnson, Sheldon Lilak and James Hall. Others present were Joe McKenzie, Sandy
Wilcox, David Clouston from The Salina Journal, Mike Wilson, observer for the League
of Women Voters, Bret Wallace and Betsy Wearing from the Greater Salina
Community Foundation.
Lynne Ryan called the meeting to order and asked for any changes or additions
to the January Board meeting. No changes were suggested.
07-07 On a motion made by James Hall and seconded by Sandie Johnson it was
RESOLVED THAT: The Board of Trustees of the Salina Public Library approves the
minutes of the January Board meeting as printed. Motion passed. P.807.02/20/07
PUBLIC COMMENTS: None
FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY REPORT: The Friends held their booksale Feb 9th thru
11 tho They have raised their prices a little bit and also had a very good preview night on
Friday. They raised almost $3000. They meet this afternoon at 4 p.m.
ORIENTATION: Bret Wallace
Bret spoke to the Board about the 2007 Marketing Plan. He spoke about several groups
that the Library will be trying to reach, among those are; young adults with young
ehildren, teenagers and young singles, seniors and Spanish-speaking residents. The key
campaign for this year will be the "It's a great day" campaign. We will be running ads
on OZ 95.5, the Neighbors section of The Salina Journal and the Buyers Guide. Cable
TV ads are also going to target young adults. Flyers will also be distributed monthly to
different locations in the community. The Library will be holding a elementary school
night with Sunset school on April 19'h. Banners have be ordered for every school to
promote the Summer Reading Program. A speakers bureau has been formed and a
mailing will be sent out to organizations to offer speakers for their events. He also spoke
about the 2007 major events planned. YS will be celebrating their 10th anniversary of
the lower level dept. this year, in conjunction with the anniversary, they will be
converting the discovery center into an imagination station.
Cover to Cover is sent to approximately 2500 people quarterly. We also email the Cover
to Cover to patrons that sign up to receive it in that manner.
DISCUSSION: Planning Update
The Planning committee will meet next month. The committee will be working on ways
to measure our success and progress in the plan. A strong public support for our
mission is one of the critical success factors. We want to increase our opportunities to
work with the public and also receive feed back from them on their needs and how the
library is meeting those needs. We also need to look at aligning the budget to meet the
plan. Joe asked for input from the Board. Jo Reed asked about the Outreach
Librarian, Joe explained that this would be someone that takes Library programs

outside of the library such as visits to daycare centers, retirement centers and schools.
Virtual Library was also discussed. Sandie Johnson asked if we have any type of class ...
for preschool children to help them learn to use the computer.
pISCUSSION: Bequest
Betsy Wearing from the Greater Salina Community Foundation came to speak to the
Board about the Foundation. She handed out information to the Board and answered
questions.
FINANCIAL REPORT:
The revenue expenditure report reflects the new year budget. We received some
appropriations in January. We have had some heating and electrial work done over the
last month.

STATISTICAL REPORT:
Youth Services received 3469 phone calls to the story line in the month of January.
The statistical report may change to track our success with the new long range plan.
LIBRARIAN'S REPORT:
CLASS held 27 sessions in January; enrollment is well over 700 at this point. Joe
handed out a sheet on legislative requests. Lynne Ryan, Joe McKenzie and Nancy Jo .
Leachman attended the Legislative Day in Topeka last week. One principal request is to
develop a courier service for ILL across the state. Next month we will hand out
evaluation forms for Joe McKenzie's annual evaluation. A new exhibit is displayed in
the coffee gallery. The coffee shop is no longer open on the weekends. Joe also
mentioned that the Friends would like a Board member to serve on their Board. Jo
Reed volunteered to serve on the CLASS board.
BOARD COMMENTS: Lynne Ryan thanked Bret for all his good work. She also
stated that she enjoyed attending Legislative Day in Topeka.
ADJOURNMENT:: There being no further business to come before the Board, the
meeting was adjourIied.

07-08 On a motion made by Sheldon Lilak and seconded by Jo Reed it was
RESOLVED THAT: The Board adjourns the February 20, 2007 Board Meeting.
