Administrative Brief
COMMISSION INFORMATION MEMORANDUM
VOL. 29 NO. 05 February 22, 2007
ADMINISTRATIVE BRIEF FROM CHIEF MULLIKIN
There are a number of activities underway within the Fire Department that the City Commission
would find interesting. Not the least of which, is an effort by my office to improve
communications and participation in all areas of the department. I had the opportunity to visit
each station and visit will all personnel regarding my background and experiences. Briefly, I
wanted the firefighters to know that my efforts to improve the department will be focused on
making their careers fun, rewarding and challenging. I am scheduling open meetings will all
personnel every 30 days, staff briefing meetings each Monday, and general staff meetings every
60 days.
Starting this month, we will begin to get feedback from citizens involved in fire and medical
incidents through a simple survey questionnaire. The administrative staff is selecting a couple of
fire and EMS incidents from each shift that will receive the questionnaire. The questionnaires
are sent with a stamped return envelope and should take only a few minutes to complete.
Essentially, we are asking them to rate our response time, attitude, job skills and overall
experience using a scale of excellent, good, fair and poor. Additionally, there is an area for them
to write comments and suggestions. The surveys are a good tool in determining how the public
views our services.
There was a recent recruit school graduation ce remony for four new firefighters and their
families. The new recruits were welcomed into the department by having successfully completed
their recruit training class. Training Chief Larry Hemphill and I congratulated the new firefighters
and reinforced the importance of family support. The recruits and their families viewed a 20
minute video set to music recapping their training experience composed by Chief Hemphill. It
was a time of celebration, family pride and some pretty good ice cream. By all appearances,
these new recruits will be excellent firefighters and medics.
Three firefighters completing their first year will be receiving their badges in a ceremony at Fire
Station One in the first week of March. Firefighter/Medic Hawbraker, Sprague and Stansberry
will be honored in a short ceremony.
The fire department continues to struggle with medical transfers in and round the community. It’s
becoming more frequent that on-duty ambulance crews must be used to accomplish this task.
When on-duty crews are used, it pulls them away from scheduled training and other important
activities. The fire department is working to identify ways to reduce the impact to on-duty crews.
The following graph depicts the type of calls the fire department has responded to during the
past year.
