Staff Report ADA KWU STAFF REPORT TO: Dennis Kissinger FROM: Mike Peterson DATE: November 27, 1995 On November 22, 1995, Mike Morgan, Barshall Stanton and I performed Handicapped Accessibility inspections of Kansas Wesleyan University's Sams Chapel and Fitzpatrick Auditorium. Our purpose was to determine what actions would need to be taken to make these two assembly facilities meet the Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibilities Guidelines.'The format of the report is organized in a manner to provide the handicapped patron with access in a logical progression. A list of the needed corrections and solutions is provided. After reviewing the lists I tried to determine an approximate cost estimate for each building. The estimated cost for the Sams Chapel project is $29,900.00. The estimated cost for the Fitzpatrick Auditorium is $41,100.00. Sams Chapel: A. Parking (Parking lot south of Pioneer Hall) l.lnstall vertically mounted signs designating the handicapped parking spaces. 2.A policy needs to be implemented that K.W.U. staff will check periodically for handicapped parking violaters and report them to the proper authorities. B. Entrance 1.Install signage with raised brailled letter, at all inaccessible entrances, which indicate the location of the accessible er~trances. C. Emergency Egress . · 1.Install a visible and audible emergency alarm system. ' D. Access to the Sams Chapel l.Adjust the door closers to allow the doors to be opened with five pounds of force or less. 2.Replace the existing inaccessible door knobs/latches with lever or loop handles. 3.Install signage with raised brailled letter at all doorways identifying rooms and spaces on a path to the auditorium and in the second floor hallway. E. Sams Chapel Seating and Stage l.Reconfigure seating to allow room for wheelchairs in seating areas throughout the auditorium. 2.Install a platform lift to provide access to ti~e stage. F. Usability of Rest Rooms l.Install signage with raised brailled letter at inaccessible rest rooms that give directions to the accessible ones. C. Additional Access l.Raise the drinking fountain on the second floor to provide twenty-seven inches of clear space under the drinking fountain for knee space. 2.Install assisted listening devices as an attachment to the auditorium sound system. Fitzpatrick Auditorium: A. Parking l.lnstall signage with raised brailled letter which provides direction to Fitzpatrick Auditorium from the parking lot B. Entrance 1. Install a ramp and landing to make the West doorway accessible. 2.Install signage with raised brailled letter, at all inaccessible entrances, which indicate the location of the accessible entrances. 3.Install power door openers to open the two doors at once. C. Emergency Egress 1.1nstall a visible and audible emergency alarm system. D. Access to Fitzpatrick Auditorium l.Adjust the door closers to allow the doors to be opened with five pounds of force or less. 2.Replace the existing inaccessible door knobs/latches with lever or loop handles. 3.Install signage with raised brailled letter at all doorways identifying rooms and spaces on a path to the auditorium. ~.Install cane detectable barriers around all obstacles along the accessible path to the auditorium. E. Fitzpatrick Auditorium Seating and Stage l.Reconfigure seating 'to allow room for wheelchairs in seating areas throughout the auditorium. 2.Install a platform lift to provide access to the stage. F. Usability of Rest Rooms l.Construct a Unisex Handicapped Accessible rest room. 2.Install signage with raised brailled letter at inaccessible rest rooms that give directions to the accessi, ble ones. C. Additional Access l.Replace the drinking fountain with a Handicapped Accessible drinking fountain. 2.Install assisted listening devices as an attachment to the auditorium sound system.
