6.5 Agr Private Sign in ROW.. CITY OF SALINA REQUEST FOR COMMISSION ACTION DATE ~ME 4/3/95 4:00 ~M. AGENDA SECTION: ORIGINA~NG DEPARTMENT: APPROVED FOR NO. 6 AGENDA: Engineering NO. 5 ~ BY: Shawn 0'Leaiy BY: Item Request to place private sign in public right-of-way by the Fair~ay Estates Homeowner's Association. Background The attached letter, submitted by the Faiz~ay Estates Homeowners Association, requests the placement of two signs in the public right-of-way near the intersection of Fairdale Road and the center private drive to the housing area. Currently, City ordinances do not allow the placement of private signs in the public right-of- way. The sign will presumably read "Fairway Estates" The sign will have concrete posts with brick face and cedar boards, a maximum of seven (7) feet in height, approximately fifteen (15) feet long and located on the north and south side of an existing entrance drive. No apparent traffic hazard or obstruction would be created by the placement of this sign and it would not interfere with the use of sidewalks. However, approval of this installation will require an exception to the current ordinances. City ordinance Section 35-40 allows the use of public property for aesthetic purposes if the City Commission grants authorization for the proposed sign. RECOMMENDATION It is recommended that the City Commission approve the request and authorize the City Clerk to issue a permit to the Fairway Estates Homeowners Association for the placement of a sign in the public right-of-way as an aesthetic improvement. We hereby apply for a permit under Section 35-40 of the City Code (use of public property for aesthetic purposes by abutting property owners). We are the 38-unit complex of townhomes immediately to the west of the munidpal golf course. There are three entrances to the west side of our complex off Fairdale Road. We want to erect brick entrance posts on both sides of all three entrances, ex,replete with signs (conforming to Code requirements) that will identify the townhome units that can be accessed from each entrance. In order to do so in an efficient and aesthetic manner, it is preferable, if not necessary, to build outside the property lines of the complex, within the Citlg~right of way on the east side of Fairdale Road. We have already discussed this matter with M~e PeterS°n, and he suggested I write this letter. We have also gone over preliminary plans with Mike, although we need to finalize them after your department has marked the location of utility lines. We expect to submit the application, complete with plot plan, sometime later this month. Thank you ha advance for your consideration and cooperation. . ~ President). ..
