Set a date to receive bids for Solid Waste Landfill Cell ii2 Construction and
Closure of the Existin$ Landfill.
Backaround:
Cell #2 is now required so Cell #1 can continue to be developed vertiCa'lly,
The top of the proposed cells are 40 feet above the existint ground. The slope
or rise be$ins on the east side of Cell itl and reaches 40 feet to the west
side. However, Cell #2 to the west of Cell #1 must also rise to prevent a
· cliff or a vertical bank.
The life of Cell #2 is estimated to be 2 1/2 years. The material removed to
build Cell #2 will be used for the closure of the existing landfill.
The City Staff has worked very closely with the Kansas Department of Health end
Environment (KDH&E) with the overall plan for the landfill. The closure of the
existing landfill site will put the landfill in full compliance with the
Subtitle D regulations. There will still be 30 years of monitoring the
existing landfill. This will not place a burden on the staff, since the new
cells will be surroundin$ the existing site over the next sixty years.
Money to construct the new cell and closure of the existing will come from the
fee supported Solid Waste fund and bonds.
Recommendation ~
It is recommended May 2, 1995 be set as the date to receive bids for the Solid
Waste Landfill Cell #2 Construction and Closure of the Existing Landfill.
