4.1 Hispanic Heritage MonthWHE~S
Today, according to the latest figures from the U.S. Census Bureau, more than
twenty six (26) million people in the United States are of Hispanic Origin.
Studies also indicate that in just a few years Hispanics will form the largest
minority group in the United States.
WHEREAS
Throughout our history, America's promise of individual freedom and
opportunity has drawn millions of Immigrants across the globe. The world
economy has benefited greatly from the contributions that Hispanies have
brought and continue to bring to our economy and our society.
WHE~
The contributions of Hispanic Americans to the life of our Nation, to the State of
Kansas, and to the City of Salina, are much more than economic. Their strong
commitment to family, community and country sets an excellent example for all
people. In the Hispanic Culture, respect and honor for this beloved country, are
attributes passed down from their ancestors through generations of Hispanic
Americans who have served and sacrificed their lives to defend this country and
ensure democracy.
WHEREAS
The achievements of Hispanic Americans such as Jamie Escalente, and Julian
Nava, in education, Archbishop Patrick Flores, religious activist, Henry G.
Cisneros, political activist, Caesar Chavez, and Linda Chavez-Thompson, Civil
Rights Activist, Gloria Esteban, Paul Rodriquez, Edward James Olmos, Maria
Amparo Escandon, Elias Miguel Munoz, members of the arts and Entertainment
industry have contributed to the very heart Of our society.
WHEREAS
In this tidbit of Mexican Folk Wisdom, "Dime Con Quien Andas y Te Digo Quien
Eres' when translated means, "Tell me who you walk with and I'll tell you who
you are" reflects the flavor, and the ardor of human respect and harmony.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Alan E. Jilk~a, Mayor of the City of Salina, hereby declare the month Of
September 15 -- October 15, 2000 as "HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH" and I urge all Citizens to
participate in this month of celebration of Hispanic Heritage.
