Approve contract for removal and replacement of trees in the downtown area.
BACKGROUND:
The 2006 Downtown operating budget has $16,000 budgeted for removal of street trees in the
downtown area, primarily on Santa Fe but with several on 5th and 7th streets. During the downtown
renovation project of the late 80's, a number of planters were constructed along the curb line creating
a streetscape. The growth and maturity of the trees is causing damage to some of the planters. In a
number of cases, multiple trees were planted in a single planter and even in cases where a single
tree was planted, the mature size of the trees has or may cause major structural damage to the
concrete planters.
A three year plan has been developed by city staff to address this problem by removing trees that are
causing the most damage and prioritizing future removals. A replacement tree would be planted in
most cases, but in certain planters only shrubs or other plant material would be installed. Most of the
trees being replaced are either Bradford Pears or Locusts. Replacement trees in this phase would be
Amur Maple or Redbuds, trees which are more suitable for the size of the planters.
The 2006 plan proposes removal of 32 trees in 20 locations, with replacement of 12 trees. Eight
planters will be replaced with shrubs. All but four locations will be on Santa Fe Avenue. All work is to
be completed by April 30, 2006.
